Can it hurt your application to Medical School if you fail the MCAT the 1st time but barely pass it the 2nd?

Question

My cousin Sara is trying so hard to get into medical school.
She failed the big MCAT test the first time she took it but she
thinks she will just be able to pass it the second time she takes
it in the next few weeks.
Does it hurt your chances of getting into Medical School by failing the MCAT the first time and barely passing it the second or does all the Medical School care about it if you passed or not?

You could probably get into a second rate med school somewhere if you meet the other requirements and have a crappy MCAT. However - think about this - how likely is she to succeed in medical school if she is having that much trouble passing the entrance exam? What kind of doctor will she make if all she does is squeak by with "just good enough" scores to pass?

Please don't be offended by this, but in all seriousness, I I personally don't want a person like that making life and death decisions about my healthcare - do you?

Study. Study, study, study. You say you've been applying and turned down before--do you even have a degree? Take a second job for a few years. Study. If you don't have a degree already, you'll need one. Start with nursing. I'm sure you want to be a doctor, but loans are going to be expensive in the long run. Start with an undergrad and go from there. What about being a doctor that is appealing to you? Why not just a medical assistant or nurse? Since you have trouble sleeping and weeping spellings over something like this, I think it may be time to talk to someone who is a professional. Those COULD be signs of depression.

If she has that much trouble with her MCAT she probably needs to choose another career. I sure don't want a doctor looking after me that could barely pass her tests.

If she has a strong application otherwise, she should do okay.

My daughter failed the first/barely passed the second try and ultimately got accepted at 12 med schools.

Well medical schools are looking for those who do well on the MCAT, so she should work her bum off to do better than "barely pass."

What does fail mean? Or barely pass? What are her MCAT scores.

If they did not care they would not give the test.

Failing and then barely passing the test is not good. It WILL harm her chances. Hopefully she has other qualities such s perseverance that the schools will consider.

I don't think so, and if she passed the 2nd time, it shows that she has the ability to work harder. It's like you coming back even stronger than the first time.

ALL I KNOW is if it were up to me.....there would be NO FCAT. I raised two boys in Florida and the teachers ended up having to spend so much time getting kids ready for the freakin FCAT than teaching them on a daily basis the things they needed to learn. I don't know the answer to this BUT I WOULD ADVISE HER TO "KEEP ON KEEPING ON" -- and do not give up....never ever give up. A lot of people are against the FCAT....my son did well on them but some of his VERY INTELLIGENT FRIENDS did not do so well but if there were to go to medical school, I'd be their patient because I KNOW HOW INTELLIGENT THEY ARE -- the FCAT is a big joke. Tell her the FCAT is a big joke and DO NOT EVER EVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS because of a stupid stupid government decision that will probably go away at some point.....
