Taft never wanted to be President of the country but was pushed into it by outside forces, His wife who wanted him to be in the office for the prestige honor, glory, parties,etc.... T.Roosevelt thought he had found the perfect replacement for himself someone who would follow in his footsteps and carry out T.R.'s policies.

If you were Taft which office would you want

I wouldn't care, I'd just want a bathtub I could fit into.

I would much rather be Chief Justice. Although being president would be an incredible honor, the political gamesmanship to get there would drive me crazy (and I don't think I would be very good at it...I have a tendency to speak what is on my mind). Once in office, the continuing politics would also be very frustrating, especially if Congress was controlled by a party hostile to my presidency. And the 24/7 media coverage of my life would not be welcomed.

As Chief Justice I would serve for life; wouldn't have to run for office; would see limited media coverage of my life; and would be able to influence the United States for several generations. I would also be able to do what I think is right (according to my interpretations of the Constitution), rather than what I felt I needed to do to keep my job. I also like researching, writing, and thinking...so it would be a cool job for me.

If I were TAFT I would want to be a Judge but I AM NOT TAFT....

TAFT was a Lawyer by training, he liked spending hours upon hours reading nine hundred page legal breifs filled with "the ex-depato of third party of the fourth municipal tarnsmittal carpusal wormblass - - - -" and other word vomit all to ponder wether the property line on a parcel of land should run between the original dimensions of an oak tree or the current imensions of an oak tree said oak tree several feet rounder than it was a hundred years back (true case)...

Only on Boston Legal and Law & Disorder do Judges sit in on imortant cases with exciting testimony and vivacious women flashing cleevage batting their eyes at 'The Judge.' Supreme Court Judges spend months years rereading the same portentous word vomit and seem to enjoy it. Finally when legal delays are no longer possible or feasible, their stentorian tones ring down from the SUPREME COURT, "No you cannot do that," or "You must Do That."

TAFT hated the Presidency. The Presidency required quicker action. And instead of having a majority of Judges agreeing with you, you have to rely on the conflicting opinion and advice of dozens. Congressmen, Cabinent Advisors, all clamouring to change your mind. Arggggghhhh, Taft hated it.

Do not over rank Roosevelts role in elevating Taft. Taft got 'the shaft' due to his wife Helen. A well meaning woman, she wanted to be First Lady. And to her credit, Helen truly believed that if anyone ought to be President it ought to be her William. It was Helen who first put the idea in Teddy's ear. It was Helen who threw a hissy fit when William whined that he did not want to be President. It was Helen who got her way. It was William who not only had to endure four irritatting years but what was worse, he was starting to like the perks of the gig, by the third year in the seduction was starting to work, William found himself wanting reeelection in 1912. And that meant breaking a treasured friendship with Roosevelt and then a humiliating loss at the Polls.

One is happy that William finally got the job he wanted, Chief Justice - - - but think, oh historians think, how many more years William would have had if Roosevelt stayed in office in 1908 and in 1910 was able to make William Howard Taft Chief Justice, an extra decade as Chief Justice and perhaps lots of matters would have met with the younger tougher resolve William was capable of, rather than the sickly man he was during the late 1920's....

Prsonally my temperment is for the Presidencey---Peace.......

PS Everyone dumps on Warren G Harding but he appointed Taft to the Supreme Court!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I myself would rather be President. More people know the presidents of the u.s. than the chief justices.

I feel the office of President is more honorable. I a not taking away from the CJ office. The reason I look at it that way is the Presidency is in the news more than the Supreme Court so more people hear your name and you effect more peoples lives everyday with your actions

I'm more interested in "fair" and "justice" - I'd rather be qualified and be Chief Justice.
