Something I have always wanted to do is draw. And I mean to draw good, like making a chair look realistic, or how to draw the shadow of a object. Can anyone please give me tips on how to practice and just some tip on how to draw.....thanks a bunch!

Don't be too critical of your own work. Keep drawing-experiment with different media-don't get discouraged. When you practice you will keep getting better and better and wont even realize it until you go back and review your older work so keep a personal portfolio. Look at others work to help develop your "eye" and give you ideas. Use good paper and pencils-cheap stuff sucks! For colored pencils I rec commend SANFORD PRISMACOLOR-you can do all kinds of stuff with them. Don't be too critical and keep drawing!

Drawing takes time and practice to develop, so don't be discouraged if you don't get the look you want right away. One thing you might find helpful is to draw the same thing several times. Start with a very rough sketch and build from there. Each time, critique it and change something so that the drawing improves. This might seem tedious, but you will enjoy seeing the end result.

Also, take time to study your subject. See how light affects it. Shadows will be darkest farthest away from the light, and fade into the highlights. If you are using pencil, it is often helpful to identify the darkest areas first. Notice where the shadows and highlights are, and whether the shadow is harsh, or fades away softly.

Proportion is the most important thing to learn. See how what you are drawing relates. For example, if your were drawing a chair, look and see, are the arms the same length as the legs? Is the back as high as the legs? These size relationships will help you acheive the realistic look you are going for.

Keep in mind however, that while you are experimenting with drawing, you may find that your talent lies in a different area. If realism isn't right for you, you could always experiment with abstract and other styles of art. You don't have to limit yourself.

If you are interested in graphite drawing, I have some articles on my site with tips on shading and choosing the proper grade of graphite:

When drawing realistic, use art pencils, & blending sticks for a smooth look & shade, & erase all the "outlines" to give it a realistic look, then use an eraser & put "highlights" in your art. (go to bookstores & libraries & look for "how to draw", etc. books)-make it a habbit, carry paper & pencils with you wherever you go, along with a "portpholio" & get noticed by public by many others in (restaurants, clubs, your daily hang-outs, etc.).-Depending on where I go or what I plan to draw, (big or small) I wear a "fanny pack" with small pads of paper to doodle & a small portphplio, then I have a back-pack for my larger paper, drawings & potpholio.-good luck.

tips..hmmm, for shading, use if you are using a pencil try and make some line darker and shade inside the dark lines...SHAding, shading do shading, if you are making a realistic chair I suggest making it 3d of course, then maybe making the back legs darker because maybe they are in less of light, and if the chair is wood, shade the wood*obviously* well good luck drawing!
