Don't feel bad...you're definately not alone. A lot of people in the United States use some form of sleep aid once in a while. Stress is common.

My husband is the same way. He uses Meletonin though.

I've however, have taken several different names of sleeping pills off and on over the course of ten-fifteen years.

Ambien (10mg)
Ambien CR (8.25mg?)
Lunesta (3mg)

There's one that began with an S (soloren?) but I can't remember it's name

There's several others but I don't remember their names it's been a while (I'm on a couple other medications so remembering old medications is hard). I've also found muscle relaxers help knock me right out for a week or two - but I get used to them easily. Those that don't might find them similar to sleeping pills without the groggy side effects.

Non-prescription medications were: Tylenol-PM, & Meletonin (1mg & 3mg), There's a slew of these over the counter medications.

Also doctors prescribe anti-depressants and especially anxiety medications for sleep because they work to combat stress - xanax being especially popular anxiety medication. The dose is lower because you're not considered as someone who is anxietious or having a panic attack. Rather the xanax works to inhibit your stress from climbing higher - it relaxes your 'nerves'.

Right now I'm on Rozerem - 8mgs. In my case however I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. My joints dislocate very easily, so I don't get restful sleep. Usually a joint starts to ache and that ache wakes my body up like a school child waving it's hand around begging to goto the bathroom or a know-it-all blissfully wanting to answer the teacher's question while the teacher looks for another child who might also know the answer...I know they say everyone dreams at night, but I find I don't always reach that state because I'm being annoyingly woken up by one thing or another. So I find the Rozerem helps me to remain asleep all night long.

On the flip side, I find that sleeping pills make me exceptionally groggy the next day, so I have a medication to counteract that - Provigil - 200 mg's. It's like a massive caffeine dose. Since I try not to use them or the sleeping pills every night, it leaves a few left overs which I don't mind sharing one with my husband when he is trudging his feet ten feet behind him as he get's ready for work.

No I don't like that feeling. I took a valium from a free sample lot my doc gave me once in my 20s...when I was feeling overwhelmed and stressed...yeah it would have been fun to fly like that but how does one FUNCTION? No thanks...I gave them to my pill popping friend who was more than delighted to have a new drug to try.

I find a glass of wine or a nice slug of Sambuca or something helps me calm down when life is tough...but rarely is life like that anymore as I gave up working for someone else and just work for me now. I earned a little sabbatical in life.

Sleeping pills ARE addicting and you will need much stronger doses the longer you stay on them. You will find you can't sleep without them after a while. That's what has happened to someone I know...they need pills to get up, pills to sleep pills for this and that and are walking pharmaceuticals....

I used them for a couple of weeks but I can't remember the name or dosage. They didn't really work so knowing that information would be irrelevant to you.
If you only need them for occasions like this then you're lucky. I guess if you need them more often or need a larger dosage then go see your doctor again. I'd hate you to take advice on medication from someone who has no medical training whatsoever, ie. me and some people who have already answered you. You should ALWAYS consult your doctor about pills and things. Sorry to sound like your mother but I had a little painkiller problem and don't want anyone else to go through any of that. Nighty - night, zzzzzzzzzzz............

Yes, when I was a teenager and broke my collar bone and arm together, and I couldn't sleep for three days because I wouldn't take the pain meds... My poor-poor saint of a mother! I was a Very Busy guy and always trying new extreme sports, but the worse thing of all this is that my Identical Brother is exactly the same. Poor Mom!

xanax isn't a sleeping pill it is an anti-anxiety medication. it does cause drowsiness so that may be why you are thinking it is a sleeping pill. RUN don't walk to throw those things away. they are VERY addictive . i don't know who prescribed them for you, but you need to find a different doctor. you may only need it 1 or 2x a month now, but soon it will be more and more often until you are taking it every night. then you will notice that .5 mg isn't working any more so they increase it to 1 mg and before you know it 1.5 then 2. do you see a pattern here??

No but I was prescribed Pixel years ago for work related stress. I cut the pill in half even though I was supposed to take a whole one and did not renew the supply though I could have. I just did not like the half way conscienceless I felt. I like to be 100% present.

yes timaziapan, when i was stressed many years ago and couldn't sleep due to break down of relationship. i only really took them once every 5-6 day with out sleep to help me get at least a full nite over the week end, they worked but the only thing i disliked was that they made me feel groggy in the morning rather than not tired, but they can help in the short term to get u back into a sleeping pattern

Yes I have. Still not too crash hot on the idea of taking tablets in order to be able to sleep, but I went for over four weeks without sleeping more than four hours a night and was becoming steadily exhausted.
Even then when I did take them they only knocked me out for seven hours.

But luckily I don't need them anymore.

Nope - try lavender oil, warm milk, watching a screen - computer, tv, game etc, herbal remedies, chamomile tea, waking up really early, going for a walk in the evening. I wouldn't want a dependency on them to occur.
