Usually by its size in relation to its species and the environment it lives in.For example a very large goldfish could be 5 or 6 years old and 12 inch's long if it lives in a pond but the same fish would be only a couple of inch's if it lives in a fishbowl. A shark living in the ocean could be 4 ft long at 3 months old.

Depending on the fish find out what thier full grown size is and then you need to determine their life span and then go from there!!

Count the growth rings on their scales if you have a microscope.
