OK well there are two reasons, first it stand for Cesar Nero, who was the most evil roman emperor ever, he killed many Christians in very bad ways (feeding them to lions, beheading you get my point) any ways in the Hebrew alphabet if you (and I forget how) give the letter numbers (A-1, B-2 etc) they add up to 666, since Nero was in charge back that it was sort of a code, but on the other hand some people say it is interpreted wrong and the number of the beast is actually 999? So I hope this confuses you more since really it is up to the individual how they interpret it.

Other theories exist, but this is the most popularly accepted:

Seven is considered a "complete" number, as are 3, 12 and 14.
By adding or taking away a value, It is generally thought that the numbers would no longer be lucky or whole. Thus, 6 and 13 are unlucky.

This is why, in America, Friday ( the 6th day of the week) the 13th is considered one of the most unlucky days of the year.

Also, as to why the devil's number is 666 and not just 6 is simple. One six is not as "powerful" as three of them.

Where Christ was a devil wasn't far behind, and personally I interpret this as an attempt to smear me and make trouble for me, by attempting to mark me with that mark of the beast, something you would expect if there was also what our ancestors referred to as devil existing out there. After all, if a devil was against someone, and a devil first heard of that 666 mark of the beast, then it would follow that it would soon become the number of the beast would soon become the favorite number of a devil as well, which doesn't surprise me.

Venetia is correct. To add to that, I have been told that any bar code can be mathematically reduced or changed to 666. Thus, Christians refuse to have bar codes implanted in the near future for ID purposes. They are the mark of the beast. Think it's silly? It's in the news now. People will go thru a store and make purchases, then swipe their bar code over the 'cash register', a no cash system.
