just one point: Jews were lending money and acting as trade intermediaries all over Europe not because they were greedy, but because it was a profession a Christian would not have accepted, because of the Church interdiction to lend money for an interest. they also had relatives leaving in other countries ( even in Muslim countries) and that made them the ideal brokers. Obviously, it also arose suspicion and hatred.

Bob Saget has to be excused for his flippant comment since he is such a nice guy and knows a lot more than his comment reveals.
The Mel Gibson story or any other current "anti-semitic" story are really quite good examples of why anybody is anti-semitic or, in fact anti- anything.
People's opinions oftem stem from personal experiences.
Let's take an example to illustrate:
Let's say you are a farmer back a few years . You constantly need to buy horses for your farm and the nearest place to buy horses is from a group of people known as Gluberians, a tribe of native folks who migrated from Gluberia hundreds of years ago.
The first few horse you buy look OK but after a few months develop walking problems and are soon useless. You put it down to them eating weeds on your property and buy some more horses. They end up the same way. You try to get compensation from the Gluberians who promise to pay but don't. So you get tough with them and thraten court action. Finally the Gluberians pay you off but you find the money is counterfeit. You tell the Gluberians this and they re-act by burning down your barn. I could go on but don't need to.
Most of us would end up being somewhat anti-Gluberian and that is how any anti- behaviour begins : it begins with bad experiences with a group of people.
So what has that to do with hating Jews? Easy
Historically the Jewish people (they are not a race mind you but a religious people) arose in ancient times, closely knit and governed by a set of rules about living and eating and praying and every facet of their lives. They chose to isolate or perhaps segregate themselves from other groups, never inter-married with other groups, produced a book on history
(it's called the Bible) refused to accept the presence of a Messiah (called Jesus) and preferred to live in many countries where they developd their own system of laws and beliefs. They also cultivated a work ethic which made them knowledgeable and wealthy.
Since the Jews lived near but not with their neighbors, suspicion and distrust began to grow especially from the Christian majority in many European countries. Laws were passed making the Jews build a fence around their area (they are called Ghettoes) and enforcing curfews which prevented Jews from leaving their area after dark.
Pressure from the heads of state in many countries(mostly Catholic) were ineffective and the result was the Jews were DRIVEN from their homes (in Spain for example the date was 1492). In England and France it was a little later on. The Jews became a wandering people, settling and enduring abuse and hostility wherever they went.
In Shaekspeare's time (1536) many of the dissolute members of royal families, needing money to finance their immoral lives often borrowed it from the Jews who were ready to oblige but at 25% interest or more. (the famous play Merchant of Venice gives an interesting and factual example of why Jews were hated underservedly of course.
(in all fairness don't we all hate those guys that charge us 28% interest on overdue bills, even though the government allows them to charge those vicious fees)
To finish this general answer let me just say that during the countless wars and battles in Europe in the 17th and 18 th century the Jewish people did not generally volunteeer. They might be said to be more loyal to their religion and their own people than to the country in which they lived.
Napoleon's great armies (he did conquer Europe you know) did not contain many Jewish soldiers, nor were there many in Britains's opposing Duke of Wellington's troops.
In World War l , during the absence of men who were in the War, many busineses and professions were taken over by enterprising Jews resulting in resentment and general hostility. The propaganda that the Jews wanted to take over the finances of Europe, although not true, was believed by many.
And that is how anti-semitism was born and grew.
Even in Hollywood some believed that the whole film industry, indeed the whole entertainment industry as well as the whole garment industry was controlled by Jews.
This is what spilled out of Mel Gibson, no matter how wrong he was to think it or say it.
True world leaders think otherwise and do not discount the magnificent efforts of Einstein and other scientists who literally changed our world, Jewish biologists who discovered many of the drugs and cures for diseases, The Rothchilds who saved English from losing the Suez Canal, and countless Jewsih scholars who have enriched the libraries and universities of the world with their wisdom.
However you question was a good one and I hope my simple answer helped you to a better understanding of it.
