and car started making noise, stopped to put oil in, check engine light went off, continued driving, but then white smoke started coming from underneath hood and I broke down in front of rental car agency - ha ha. When AAA towed my car a serpentine belt fell off so we thought we just had to replace that. Replaced belt and started car and took oil cap off oil then sprayed out at high velocity. And engine is now making a tapping noise. Any ideas?

ok smartass men who ansnwered this question the dip stick is broken off so I have no way to check the oil and in the past when I would accelerate and it would begin making a noise it would be time to add oil I didnt even put in a whole quart. Some of you men are f-ing jackasses = I just wanted some help and advice because I am poor and cant afford a decent car or to take it to a shop. We cut open the oil filter and there are no metal flakes in it. Thank you to the dodge guy for being nice. I am not an idiot - my boyfriend told me not to put to much oil in it so he suggested half a quart because the engine light was on and we thought thats was what it was since that was what it was in the past. Why do men have to be such smug superior jackasses (not all and thanks to those of you who are decent)

So just to let you all know I didnt put too much oil in - it was something that apparently hardly ever goes wrong on Nissans (just my luck) When the serpentine belt was flung off we discovered the underlying cause was because the crankshaft pulley actually separated in the middle, expanding it so that it hit the engine, which was making the terrible noise. Since this almost NEVER happens with the car we could not find a parts store, junk yard, or nissan dealer that had the part in stock and so had to order it for which we will have to wait about 4 days. And it was a biyatch to get that thing off of there. But hopefully if someone does a search they will find this info and it will help them out if they are having similiar problem - oh yeah part cost about $175 labor cost lots of loving for my boyfriend :)

It sound to me like it ran hot. Since you said that when you had it towed the belt was off. If the belt broke or whatever happen for it to come off then that would have stopped the water pump from flowing water. Check the water level. Now if you over fill the engine oil without checking it first, the worst that will happen is it can leak out of the seals, and if it overfilled enough for it to reach the crankshaft the it will beat the oil like a blender. That will cause air to mix with the oil which will cause low oil pressure. As far as oil blowing out for the oil cap. Unless it has a baffle there to keep oil from spraying out, that is normal.

First for all you don't start the car or drive it with the oil cap off. Second of all if the car is having white smoke coming from it that means that it is burning oil. So ask yourself a couple of Questions. Did I put the right kind of oil in the car? Did i put enough of oil in the car to where the dipstick that checks the oil level reads full or add one quart? Is the radiator fluid look muddy? Do the oil in my car look like chocolate milk? When was my last oil change? it sounds like that you have a blown head gasket or severly worn piston rings. It has to be one or the other!!!

its bad for the engine if you over fill it,it will cause oil seals to blow along with it blowing oil out all over the place,it can also cause a loss of oil pressure because its too full,in short it can ruin a good engine in no time, you need to have it drained and refilled to the proper level and see if any damage has happened to it,it could have blown the front and real engine seals in it,it didn't help it none when you done this, good luck on it.

If you overfill the crankcase enough so the oil reaches the crankshaft, it will foam up and cause untold grief.

Check you oil level..... if it is overfilled drain to the proper level, if under then fill it.... D Not overfill the oil.

engines manufactured today have much tighter tolerancing than engines from the '50's and the '60's where all those bad habits developed. So what do you think will happen when you try to sqeeze something into a place where it won't fit...do you think you will break it?

WOW , DO YOU KNOW THERE IS A DIPSTICK THAT TELLS YOU IF YOU NEED OIL OR NOT . YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR CAR INTO A SHOP AND HAVE IT LOOKED AT . ASAP , AND DON'T ADD OIL UNLESS YOUR DIPSTICK SAYS "ADD" IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR LOOKING AT UNDER THE HOOD , DON'T OPEN IT AND HAVE SOMEONE WHO DOES SHOW YOU WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN YOU DO OPEN THE HOOD . A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE MAY SAVE YOU THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRS
