you are talking with respect to standard accounting practice. Intellectual property can be quite valuable, and should be an asset on the company books. They are intangible in respect that they are not real property or physical equipment that you can put an inventory tag on.

they are intangible assets because they cant be touched literally unlike machines, vehicles premises , land and building which are tangible assets
goodwill is another intangible asset.
