Witches have been viewed as bad throughout history. I think they have been misunderstood. Most worship the harmony of nature and white magic. The Salem witch trials kicked off the negative stigma that still remains today. People fear what they do not understand. I don't believe in witches or warlocks or anything like that but there are many people who do. If someone wants to believe that they are witches and can cast spells etc, I say more power to them. Everyone should be able to believe what they want.

The term "witch" tends to have a negative connotation because witches are thought of as old, decrepit hags who curse people and almost always have a wart on their nose. These descriptions Are almost always entirely false; every once in a while, you'll come across and old "witch".

Witches actually do not practice malicious arts, but actually attempt to improve themselves or others with the help of deities, spirits, or whatever they might believe in.

Here's another fact I'm throwing out there: all followers of Wicca, a religion, are referred to as "witches", regardless of gender.

So people are probably so quick to criticize because they are ignorant as to what a witch really is.

Actually it is very simple, because those that are "so harsh" believe any delving of what "Witchcraft" really is may contradict what their religion preaches.

At one point in history many Christians practiced the crafts.
Dowsing
Midwifery
Healer
Bone setter
Herbalist
Maker of potions
Candle maker
Animal caller
Scientists
Teachers of philosophy
Psychic
Empath
Maker of poultices
Librarians
Finder of Ley Lines
Magick

All of those within the above crafts were then called witches by Christianity and many executed for practicing their craft.

To study and work in any craft is not becoming a Witch. It is the fanatic Christians of the 15th and 16th centuries that believed all on the list above as minions of the Christian demigod Satan. They have yet to accept their error.

Christians often react harshly on the subject of witchcraft claiming justification by saying the bible preaches against it. In fact the only reference to withcraft "thou shall not suffer a witch to live" which was used as a premise for the witch burnings is actually a mistranslation from the hebrew "thou shall not suffer a charlatan to live" christians may also do well to remeber the prophet who consulted "the witch of endor....?"

For christians it is easier to condemn then it is to understand.
