I had a pair make it to about 14 & 15 respectively. This was a LOOOOONG time ago. They electrocuted themselves when they pulled the heater into the tank with them. It was a 15 gallon (24 x 12 x 12) which was too small for them and the only type of heaters in those days were the hang on the back style.

and the filters were mainly this style:

The ate mostly Tetra Reptomin with Cod Liver Oil (good source of vitamin D instead of UVA/UVB lights and I got it from the same bottle too!) as well as hamburger (not good) and dandilion greens (good). It the winter they also got green leaf lettuce (also good).
If they had a better home and better food, I'm certain that they would have lived much longer. The lighting was the incandescent tube style, which lacks the UVA and UVB light.

In captivity about 20 years, but one turtle was reported to live to 41.
Great care is needed in taking care of turtles and there are different kind of red eared sliders. Good luck!
