Granted, I dont think you should just flop it out and not try to be a little bit modist. But if your nipple and such is not exposed and its just a little skin, not the whole breast--whats the big dea? I personaly will NOT feed my child in the bathroom! Thats just gross. And my opinion is if people dont like it, dont watch!? I dont think a childs head should have to be covered while they are eating as long as you pull your shirt down where your not flashing everyone, I mean come on we can do this and be modist too. So what is the big deal about breast feeding in a public place? Breast Feeding is not sexual in any way, its a natural way to feed your child. Any opinions on this, and please lets keep it polite. I was not rude in my question so I dont expect rude answers that some can give so easily. Thanks very much.

I am mom to 4 children. I breast fed all of them, the last 2 until they self-weaned at 11 months and 14 months. I breast fed in public a lot and I never encountered any negative comments and if I received any rude looks, I didn't notice them. I was modest and discreet, took advantage of my specialized nursing tops when I knew I was going to be in places where privacy may be at a minimum. I preferred privacy for my own reasons, it had nothing to do with worry over possible discomfort of other people. I did like to use a light receiving blanket or a cloth diaper over my shoulder and over the baby's head, but that was to keep the baby focused on the task at hand - I had some pretty distractable babies! Sometimes I hear about a big deal over breast feeding moms, but my breast feeding in public experience was positive. My kids are now 28, 25, 22, and 10. My oldest has a 4 month son of her own now and he is exclusively breast fed. She, too breast feeds in public and has not received any negative response that I am aware of. One thing she does that works well, is she'll take him to a dressing room to nurse if we are shopping in a store that has dressing rooms. It is private and clean. I would never nurse my baby in a bathroom unless there were a separate area specifically provided for a mother's area. We have several local restaurants we patronize specifically because they are breast-feeding mom friendly. I think if people do make a fuss over a baby breast fed in public it is usually because of their own discomfort as most moms I have seen are very discreet and modest.

I think it has to do with our society's perception of the breast. It's not recognized as a "natural way of feeding babies." It's a sex symbol. Which is why women flaunt them and get implants, etc. Personally, I think women should breastfeed wherever they want to. It's natural. At the same time, nobody should make a big display of it and whip it out in front of everyone. A little modesty goes a long way. I'm planning on breastfeeding whenever necessary, but at the same time I'll find somewhere a little private to do so.

Most folk aren't against it. We may feel uneasy or uncomfortable sitting in a waiting room or other closed in space while a young mother "flops it out" as you say, but we would never make the situation worse by pitching a fit about it.

Stories you hear about are always caused by some small group of busybodies who don't really have the authority to deny a mother--but who try to anyway.

The most recent incident I heard about was caused by other WOMEN trying to stop a mother from feeding her child.

If I was a woman, however, I think I would express and save milk for feeding when I need to be out in public. It would be the right kind of food, minus the uncomfortable public nudity angle.

i have 2 children that i breast fed for a year each I like to cover with a blanket while feeding in public but at home I would just cover as much as I could with my shirt, I am all for breast feeding in public a lot of things happen in public that should not take place but feeding your child is not one of them we do not look down on the mothers that pop out a bottle and feed their child, nor should we look down on mothers that choose to breast feed their child.

I don't know what the deal is, I personally do not plan on breast-feeding but I would never discourage or judge a mother for doing so, even in public. Alot of older people find it disrespectful, because they're not used to it...and alot of younger people find it "wierd" because they don't understand or don't want to explain it to their children....

It is a matter of personal space I believe, people don't like being forced into things they don't understand, or agree with.

Oh and good for you for breast-feeding, no matter what people like...you are doing a favor for your child.

I don't see anything wrong with mothers feeding in public. As long as she's not exposing herself to the world, she can go for it. Unfortunately, nowadays, any little thing can be a target for perversion. Personally, for my safety and my babies safety, I wouldn't whip out a boob in public.

I don't see what the big deal is either. No on says anything to the woman who is wearing a practically see through shirt with no bra, but they will get bent out of shape over a woman and child doing the most natural thing in the world.

As long as you're being as modest as possible, don't worry about it. I've BFed anywhere you can think of. Even in church. It amazes me how it's okay for a teenager or woman can walk around with everything out and that's okay, but latch on a baby and people freak. Something is seriously wrong in this society!

I agree with you, it is a natural thing. I think it is ridiculous that people expect a mom to sit in a stinky dirty washroom to feed their little one. I'm pretty sure you will get a lot of ignorant answers.
