I'm traveling with a friend to Dallas over Labor Day weekend to see if it's a place I could live. There has to be something to do over that weekend! What do you Texans do during the day for fun? We're not much for clubbing, but if you know of any nice restaurants let me know. We're staying downtown at the Hyatt and debating whether to get a car or not. Help!

You could go to the surrounding cities like Ft. Worth to the stockyards or go hang out in Addison. Downtown Dallas has the west end which really doesn't offer that much per se but you could go to Mockingbird Station which has a lot of shops and restaurants and it's close to downtown. If you have money to burn go to park cities and don't forget to check out northpark mall and go to the cheesecake factory that's right across the street. PF Changs rocks if you like Asian cuisine. You could go to the Galleria and ice skate and they have wonderful restaurants. Welcome to Texas and have a nice stay. Oh yes, you will need a car and be prepared for a little traffic. We do have a rail system here but if you want to go further than downtown get a car. The train will get you from where you are to the station and to northpark but if you want to go anywhere else the train sucks.

Get a car. Dallas is a fairly large city, nearly as large as Houston. The Metroplex is larger than New Jersey.

There isn't a whole lot to do during the day in any major city in Texas. Why? Climate. It will be hot. Probably close to 100°, but dry and breezy. I was in the area back in 2000 and it was 113 on Saturday and Sunday, and 111 on Labor day. Yeah, you could hang out in a mall, or visit the zoo, or go out and eat, but you could do that in Shreveport, LA, too. Where will most people in the Dallas area be on Labor Day weekend? Probably on a lake. There are 17 or 18 major lakes in the region. You could see a Rangers game... they're in town (Arlington) on Labor Day. Six Flags is near there.

Visit downtown Fort Worth while you're there. It is very quaint in a lot of areas, and a huge departure from the Trammell Crow-constructed downtown Dallas.

You will need to eat, so try barbecue. The D-FW area is famous for good barbecue, and not that pork stuff... beef! There are far more barbecue joints and far better ones than in my home of Houston (4 hours southeast).

There's lots to do at night, both in restaurants and bars.

Downtown, Dallas, isn't very good right now, they let it go down, and now they are trying to fix it up. If youw ant to live INSIDE the city of Dallas, then you will see that most of it is ghetto or just poorer neighborhoods. If you plan on living in the downtown area, you might have a good time. There are a LOT of clubs in Dallas, though. You could go to the original Six Flags (over Texas) in the suberb of Arlington. Also, the Dallas suberbs are nice to live in. It's better to live in one of our suberbs than in the city. You just have to live in Dallas, Texas to know what it's like here. Don't look forward in seeing too much cattle, though. Nothing like that around the Dallas city, but maybe some in the suberbs, maybe. Too much to explain! Fort Worth is not part of Dallas, it's in another county. But a lot of people like to call it DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth). So yea! Lol

Have to rent a car. My favorite place is Six Flags over Texas in Arlington. Just a couple minutes from down town Dallas. Then you have the Fort Worth stock yards. Then darn it can't think of that place Oh! got it Mesquite Mall right off I-30 east.
On 30 going to Six Flags you have a lot of good restaurants to grab a bite at. Of course my favorite is Texas Roadhouse. Too many good Mexican restaurants just pick one.
Right around Six Flags there is a whole lot of other stuff to do like the Aquarium etc.

Get a car...the city is really spread out....

There are many transplants here from other cities....because of the tax benefits to companies who relocate here. Anyway, because of that, you will find that there is a lot of social networking here, that you won't find in other cities. People out and about meeting others, etc.... People are very friendly. It seems every weekend there is a party, art opening, function, etc... to attend. I have only lived here seven years, but have more friends and activities to do, then my lifetime living elsewhere.

Every weekend it seems there is a pool party...so get in shape. Because of the temperature...many, many homes have their own pools. Even modestly priced homes have fantastic pools...and people use them a lot to entertain.

If staying downtown, check out the west end, also the Knox/Henderson area...Mockingbird Station area is cool.

Eat at the Mi Cocina in the West Village...excellent food...excellent bar attached...a lot of people in and out...lot of shops around.

The Dallas Museum of Art has great exhibits...the Dallas Arboretum also has a full line up of activities.

Downtown Dallas World Aquarium is cool....

The Dallas Summer Musicals also have great travelling live theater productions. In addition, there are many smaller live theater places around the city.

Addison is a fantastic place to live and to visit...in addition to shopping...if you hit Belt Line Road at the Tollway, there is every kind of restaurant you can imagine....also, there is a comedy club, a dueling piano bar, martini bars, and the Water Tower Theater...which has great live, local theater. The Galleria mall is nearby. Addison is about 10 minutes north of downtown...they also sponsor many different activities throughout the year.

If you want urban ammenities, museums, theaters, professional people...you want to stick with the downtown area or Addison area...if you are single....married professionals and their families live in Plano, Frisco, Coppel or Grapevine areas. Most other suburbs are very, very redneck.

As far as Dallas natives...most are very nice...but, Dallas is a lot about bling....I have never seen so many prestige cars in my life...the women have big hair, big boobs, and big diamond rings. In 2005 there were more plastic surgeries performed in Dallas, than any other city in the country. Many people are very materialistic. As much as I love Addison...there was an article recently about the $30,000.00 millionaires that lived there...basically, the concept was, the people only made 30K a year, but lived like millionaires in townhomes they couldn't afford, driving leased cars, they couldn't keep up with the payments of.

So, if you can get past these people, and just laugh it off...Dallas is a great place...it's a huge city, with a lot to do....and there are so many people, so many new people, that eveyone can find a group/activities, etc...that interest them.

Didn't touch on outdoor activities...but, if you like the outdoors, there are many fantastic lakes in the area to go skiing, boating, wave-runners, etc... Also, White Rock lake is a great place to ride your bike, or run....the KATY trail, right through downtown Dallas/Knox-Henderson/AA Center is a great running/biking trail.....Addison, also has great trails that run through the residential areas....for biking/running...also, Addison has two dog parks.

Oh well, best of luck to you.

Here's my favorite restaurant in Dallas: fabulous all-you-can-eat Indian food at a Hare Krishna temple. I've brought 3 other people there and everyone's loved it: http://www.kalachandjis.com/

Just a tip, GET A CAR. You could take taxis, but it wouldn't be that wise. Also, Try fort worth, go to cow town, and stockyards, it is really neat and there are clubs, but you can have fun with out them.

You going to have to get a car in dallsa/ ft worth area. We don't have much public transportation services. If you are looking for a good place to move you should try the Los Colinas area and North Dallas area. Its much safer ever place than South Dallas. South Dallas isnt safe at all.
