Not leaving a tip is not saying anything other than you are cheap. Bad service should be brought up to management. A lot of times servers have to tip out a percentage of their sales. So if you're stiffing the waitress, you're stiffing innocent parties such as the bus boy, hostess, bartender, etc. I must add that because the food is bad is not the server's fault. The kitchen does lose tickets and no matter how much you yell at them for your order, they will just push it back further because they are making 13.00 an hour. 15% is a minimal tip of the total bill. There are other things that your server does as well, such as take food to other tables, make salads, stock ice, expo food (dress the potatos, make sure everything is correct ect) They are also busy cleaning the kitchen, refilling tea/coffee, making desserts, ect. So if you really think you have bad service why not just TELL the waiter what they did wrong or ASK why you were treated this way. Trust me if you don't tip, you'll be labeled and always get lousy service, because who wants to work their butt off for free?

Most waitresses make very little hourly and depend on their tips. When I waited tables my actual paycheck was so little I would forget to deposit it sometimes. For the most part having bad service is NOT the waitresses fault, however it is not difficult to tell if it is. For instance, if your food takes a while to get to you but is good and hot, it is probably slow kitchen staff. If it is cold it is probable his/her fault. The server may have a lot of tables and too much to do but that is where I think the good ones earn their tip.
I think a tip should always be left (or else you may not want to return to the same restaurant for fear of how bad your service will be having been tagged as a "non-tipper") but the amount of the tip should depend on service.

I do think that a tip should be earned, but I think I always tip. There may be things behind the scenes that you don't see that may make it seem like service was bad. Usually I leave around 15% of the bill. If the service was bad, I leave 10%, but if it was good, I leave 20%.
Tips are the main source of income for waiters, and it makes me feel bad if I don't leave one. Servers make less than minimum wage and rely on tips.

ALWAYS TIP!!! Unless the server is absolutely, unbearably awful. Servers make less than minimum wage (2.13 where I am) and rely on tips to make money. And please understand if food is taking a long time 99% of the time it is not the servers fault. We are the messengers. A good tip is between 15 or 20 percent or double the tax is an easy rule of thumb.

a GOOD tip should be earned, but you should always tip servers are human, and people make mistakes. restaurants are teams and sometimes the mistake is not one of the server but of someone else on the team dropping the ball. give the benefit of the doubt and tip...15% at a minimum, more if the service is great...we're all people, and servers really don't make a lot of $ hourly...it's a really hard job, i always leave a tip!

ok......????? Yes a tip is earned but if the service is poor because the server is too busy... that is the owner's fault not the server... by not leaving a tip you are penalizing the wrong person... working in a rest is hard as hell dealing with all different kinds of people.... maybe you should be a little more sympathetic
HEY... PENNY PERSON...... LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU WORK SO I CAN STOP BY AND LEAVE YOU ONE
if you don't like the service leave nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! don't be a blatent a@#$$%

Yes, I usually tip 15-20% if the service is acceptable. If it's a place I frequent and/or the service is outstanding, I might tip a bit more.
On rare occasions, if the service is absolutely horrible, then I will tip less. Only once was the service so bad that I left nothing.

Yes. I ALWAYS tip. I've been a bartender for 15 years and before that I was a waitress. We are required by law to claim 10% of our sales as income and we are taxed regardless if we got that tip or not. It cost us money to wait on you when you stiff us. I usually tip 25% , I know a lot of people don't tip as well as I do, but being in the industry I do.
Yes, I have received bad service, I'll still tip 15%. Depending on how bad the service is, I might complain and will not return.

No a tip has to be earned. We have had servers that come by the table to drop the food off and you never see them again. I once asked for my waitress to be sent to the table only to be informed she was on break and would be by in about 10 minutes. She did get a written tip to take better care of her tables if she wanted to continue being a waitress.

I agree w/ the finished element that the guy has to earn it.... If the provider is physically powerful I do depart better than the regularly happening 15%, yet while the provider became awful i will depart $a million or $2 if the provider became quite awful and that i almost had to serve myself than I depart a serviette with a message on it... TIP: next time it quite is beneficial to grin and deal alongside with your customer precise. you may want looking after the customer, and being well mannered and you may get a competent tip for a paintings properly carried out.
