Conjugates can be used to rationalize denominators. For example:

1/(5 - √3)

Multiply both numerator and denominator by 5 + √3. This is the conjugate of 5 - √3. You get:

1/(5 - √3) = 1(5 + √3) / [(5 - √3)(5 + √3)] = (5 + √3)/(25 - 3)
= (5 + √3)/22

This can also be done with complex numbers.

1/(2 - i) = 1(2 + i)/[(2 - i)(2 + i)] = (2 + i)/(4 + 1) = (2 + i)/5
