theyre symbols. You need a number key on your keyboard (normally on the left side of the keyboard). On my laptop, you need to press a "Num" key to activate them as they are on the keys of letters. Once it's pressed, a light will go on with a 1 in a lock (number lock) which is normally next to the caps lock light. Then you can use these numbers with ALT (press and hold alt then a number(s)) and the symbols will show onc you released alt. e.g. ALT + 3 is a heart: ♥ or Alt + 158 (random number) is × and theres a bunch of symbols. just play around with them :) When you're done with using the number keys, just press the "Num" key again and the light will go off, then you can use they keys for letters again :)

Here's some examples:
Alt + 1: ☺
Alt + 2:☻
Alt + 3:♥
Alt + 4:♦
Alt + 5:♣
Alt + 6:♠
Alt + 7:•
Alt + 8:◘
Alt + 9:○
Alt + 10:◙
Alt + 50:2
Alt + 60:<
Alt + 70:F
Alt + 111:o
Alt + 122:z
Alt + 158:×
Alt + 234:"
Alt + 734:Ì
Alt + 0160 (can be used as an empty symbol for, example, MSN screen name being blank, it doesnt allow space but it does allow this.):

as i said, just play around with them for a while and find the symbols. have fun!

You press and hold Alt on the right side of the spacebar and then you press a number in the num lock section. Hold them and then release them and you get Alt 3 = ♥. See it's pretty easy to do :)

Copy and paste the chart

Change the fonts on top to view extra character pictures. Like wingding has a few popular ones too.

Just select it, hit the button COPY and then right click on where you want to paste it and click PASTE.
