Lots of confusion here, and not much real data.
special-chemical-x has it right.
Okay, you are a people who are designing a calendar, which is important to know when to plant and harvest crops. Your carving this into stone don't forget. So do you keep going forever or do you pick some point almost 300 years in the future when you stop and expect the next set of calendar makers to pick up where you left off?
The answer is that the Myan calendar only went up to the year 2012 because any longer would be just too much hard work to carve. The Myans left no tales or data or even legends claiming the end of the world in 2012. But, the doomsayers were looking for a reason to claim that the world would end, so they made this stupid dire prediction. These are the same people who made the predictions that the rapture would happen back in the year 1,000 and the year 2,000. Since those kind of people have been wrong twice I will go with the crowd that doesn't worry about it.
Yes, the earth has changed axis several times in the past, but there is no information that says it will anytime soon and if it did the magnetic field would weaken as it changes. So that isn't what's happening. If it did we would be in serious trouble because the Earth's magnetic field is the main thing that protects us from the harmful radiation of the sun.
I would be more likely to worry about the end of the world in 2036. Last I checked the odds were around 35,000 to 1 that the asteroid Apothos would pass through a narrow gravity and orbital window in 2026 and then come around and ten years later it could hit the earth.
The chances of an asteroid impact with the earth in the future is 100% as is the chances of a mass extinction type of impact like that which killed the dinosaurs, but so far nothing has been found to be on that course for at least the next 200 years. But, watch out in 800 years, we might have something then.
Or we could find a new one tommorrow. The problem with finding comets is we usually don't find them until they are glowing in the sunlight and often that is AFTER they pass the orbit of earth. If you need something to worry about then I would suggest that. So join Skywatch and help find those Near Earth crossing Objects (NEOs).

You guys are not getting the question. He isnt talking about the north and south pole.
He is talking about the Axis of Evil on the earth. Them shifting and the world ending by 2012. Im not sure if it will happen or not. But Bush is trying his hardest to do his part.

No, the axis of the planet is not going to shift. Every so often, at intervals measuring thousands of years, the earth's polarity reverses - north becomes south and so forth. This is not an "end of life as we know it" scenario. Few people would be aware of it happening at all if it did happen during your lifetime. The business about 2012 is another urban legend - in other words, sounds scary but is absolute nonsense.

According to Mayan astrology, the world will come to an end in year 2012. They may have this wrong by a year, because coincidentally, in the year 2011, all of the planets are to align in space to coincide with the biggest solar storm in human history. What does this mean? Well, guess what, we as humans have never experienced this before, so this could be more than devastating. (solar storms occur every 11 years, some resulting in power failures like the one in Montreal in 1989). Personally, I'm scared and will begin to stock up on survival gear. (I'm dead serious).

I heard about the Mayan calender ending in 2012. It is suppose to be the most accurate calender in the world. Maybe that's where you get the idea. The world will end as we know it eventually, but 2012? That's up to God.

Matter and energy are neither created nor destroyed-they merely change form. I don't think the Mayans knew that. The shifting your'e talking about is called 'wobble'. The earth has been 'wobbling' for billions of years. Plus, do you really think the creator of this universe is a doomsday maker? NOT!!

Yes i hear the same stupidity as well. Apparently there will be a huge solar flare that will disrupt the electromagnetic field and turn things like cell phone and telecommunications system useless. Will it actually happened is anybodies guess but I would not worry to much about it.

The earth does switch its axis regularly every few hundred years but you wont notice the difference, and it will not make the world end!!

The mayans predicted the end of their world in 2012.
Unfortunately it came a lot sooner than that for the Mayans...
