My grandfather will be turning 70 in September. My mom and I are planning a surprise party for him but we also want to get him a really nice gift. We are thinking of spending like $300 maximum on the gift. He is really special to me. He has everything which is why this gift idea is difficult. He likes, cooking, carpentry, gardening, cars, baking. He doesn't like museums, restaurants, nothing tht requires him to be around a lot of people for long time. He has every gardening and tool imaginable to man...he has almost every baking machine. He's Cuban...he loves music and old movies. We were thinking about a video camera or a nice watch...but does anyone have any other ideas?? I would really appreciate it! Thanks

From reading your question, your grandfather wouldn't want anything for his birthday. He'd want to hang out with you. Get him something small and use that $300 bucks to make more time to be with him. Take a day off work to just hang out with him here and there. At 70, he'll love to have a lot of your time. And you'll always treasure the memories.

I loved my grandparents and they're all gone now. I spent a lot of time with them but I wish I'd spent more time with them than I did. It ain't about a gift, it's about spending time together.

Just get him something simple. It's the thought that counts. Get some really fine chocolate or some treat most folks wouldn't buy for themselves. Something he can enjoy with you and your mom.

Like I said, use the money to leverage a day off here and there to take your grandpa somewhere.

Enjoy your celebration!

Since your grandfather likes music and old movies you could get him a collection of the old musicals. The 30's and 40's had great movies that featured the big bands of that era. You could also get him a nice pocket watch with and inscription or a picture from you in the front cover, so anytime he looks at the time he will also be reminded of those that love him.

How about a nice digital camera? But.... get a simple one. I'm no where near 70 yr old, but I have trouble remembering how to operate my little Canon with the features it has.

Or how about a professional portrait of your family that he can put on his wall or furniture. I'm a grandpa and I LOVE pics of my kids and grand kids.

What about some Scotch or Wiskey. Then get him a mug with 75th on it. Or you could get him a photo of the hole family framed.

Why would you post this in the marriage and divorce category? Am I missing something here?
