research, research research. go down to your local superior courthouse. they have a document department. they will have copies of all the premade documents available for you. ask them what ones you will need to adopt a child, but they may not answer since it may be considered legal advise.
check out your local library for self help books. they have them for divorce and custody issues too. read all the documents you are given, read them twice over. if you read them correctly, one document will lead you to another until you have all the documents referring to what you are in need of.
if the father of the child is alive, he will have to relinquish his rights as a father first. if he doesn't, then the case stops there.
if the father wants to give up his rights, you have to take this to child custody where he will sign his rights and the judge can grant them to you.
good luck.

If you live in the US...
You probably could. You still have to go through the court/legal process, but there probably isn’t a *requirement* that you have an attorney. However, I would NOT recommend that you do this without an attorney, because if you make one *small* mistake along the way that can invalidate the adoption.

You can petition the court .... but a lawyer still has to do it........ there has to be tons of papers signed that the father of the child has to sign, to give up his rights...... then you can proceed........
