They get stereotyped as kids who take drugs, drink alcohol, hang out on street corners and wear hooded tops. I dont think this is fear as not every teenager is like this.

looking at the tabloid papers this morning, yes, you would think every single one had a gun or at least a knife, and that they all took cannabis and on the verge of taking opiates, and that they all had ASBO's, wore Elizabeth Duke jewellery, and chucked up their guts on the pavement every Friday night. Thankfully this is still the minority, sadly the ones that do well at school, or do voluntary work, or are in scouts, etc, don't get reported in the news!

You are fortunate to be learning this lesson at an early age.
Yes, we should all dislike stereotyping. It is a common problem that continues to affect everyone in one way or another throughout our lives. Pick any group; the elderly, rich white people, poor white people, black males, Japanese tourists.... you know what I'm talking about. There are stereotypes directed toward all groups thoughout all of our lives.
It is the basis for what often passes as prejudice. It IS a form of prejudice.
Most often it is simply mental laziness. It is easy to lump all of any specific group into one stereotypical statement. The teens you describe DO exist, but of course they are only a portion of all teens.Unfortunately, they are the most visible and attract the most attention. If you happen to be quietly sitting by, you will NOT be noticed.
Prejudice is the same thing, only amplified to irrational extremes. The stereotyping is then used to justify irrational acts against those to whom those acts are committed.
It can be said that those stereotypes are based on fact. The injustice caused by indiscriminate use of those generalities and the spreading of unjustified negative perceptions through rumor, innuendo, or lies, is the core of the resulting problems.
Be aware of these facts and avoid falling victim to them. Your awareness, pointed out to others when appropriate, will help promote better manners all around.

Only uneducated people would think that all teenagers drink, do drugs, and have sex. I'm 17 and I have never done any of those things you have mentioned. It depends on you to break out of that stereotype.

I think the kids that do drugs or drink alcohol are only doing it to piss off and rebel against the ****** *** authority (adults and cops) that try to tell them what to do and how to behave. I'm sure not all teenagers do that but a good majority do.

Fight to rebel against them They are only stereotypes because so many do act this way. But there are stereotypes for every age group....it's hard to avoid them all. Just be the best person you can be for whatever age you are. It's all you can do.

Not EVERY teen....hopefully not even most...but enough that there definitely IS a stereotype. It's probably not fair to the "good" kids...but the fault lies with those who deserve the stereotype. They ruin it for the rest.

Yeah but adults and children also have their own stereotypes.

Did you know that one stereotype of teenagers though is that they believe the world to revolve around them? *ahem ahem*

It's probably not "fear" that they get stereotyped as bad spellers either, but sometimes it applies.

Well, I agree! Just as not all single mother are sat on their arses all day, sponging off the state and watching Jeremy Kyle...

It's funny. You said fear when I think you meant fair. What's funny is that I think you're absolutely bang on - it's all down to fear.
