My husband and I are going to Aurora actually for school, and we have found an apt for a 6 mo lease only - that would be good to get him done with his last semester. There is also a nice 3 br house. We could take the house, but I feel this would be more perm... and I was thinking maybe what if we don't like Denver? My bro is in Colorado Springs and says we would love it there...

Do you think we should take the temp 6 mo housing - though it seems a bit run down (it's by Aurora mall and I keep hearing bad things about the area) and just wait out the 6 mos, or settle into the nicer side of Aurora for a year or more?

We are moving from Vegas, have 1 son (7 yo), and have never been to Co.

We are moving in about 5 weeks.

We have to go to Denver first - because of school - but it sounds like it may be best to just take the 6 month then - get a feel and then go from there.

You state that you will be going to school. I assume you would be commuting if you ended up in Colorado Springs. The drive on I-25 is often a mess in the rush hour traffic. This could significantly add stress to your situation.

I would think you could survive the 6 months at which time you would be in a better position to decide which location to choose. Both cities have great communities.

I would definitely check with a local police report or an apartment placement service (they are free) regarding the neighborhoods....keep in mind CHEAP rent is a sure sign of an undesirable area. Try to find something in the middle.

I am a long term resident of Colorado Springs. Growth has brought lots of changes to what once was a quiet, clean citiy. But it is still a great place to live.

My pics and memories of Colorado Springs are here:

I cannot stress enough how HORRIBLE Aurora is, especially around the mall. The last time I was at that mall I feared for my safety and will definetly not be going back. Avoid the area at all costs! What about your son? What schooll will he be going to? I hope its no where near Aurora.
As for your original question, I find Co Springs to be too small and conservative for me. But some people like it. They only way to find out is to visit. I would choose the house in Denver. If you really hate it, you could always move in a couple years. But I doubt you will. Few people who move to Denver regret it.

If you are going to school in or around Aurora you are much better off staying near Denver as it is much colser than CO Springs. There are some nice places in Aurora if you go further South towards Parker. I am living near Parker road and Arapahoe road and it is a pretty decent area, but is still technically Aurora. I know there are a bunch of homes and condos around here for sale/rent. Good luck though.

I've lived in Colorado and I hated Denver! I would definitely choose Colorado Springs. It's a lot nicer. I would try to find a smaller town. Denver and Aurora has a bad crime rate. I would also do as much research as you can online. go to each city police or municipal court blotter and check out what crime they have etc.

Absolutely take the lease. I wouldn't get anything permanent if you've never been here before. Six months will give you a good feel for Colorado and different areas.
There are a lot of smaller towns - you don't have to settle for a bigger city.
We are in the very south part of Longmont - 10 minutes from Boulder and love it.

My sister lives in Fort Collins and absolutely loves it! She used to live in Springs and Denver too but she prefered Denver. It's a personal opinion.

Colorado Springs is Republican.

Denver/Boulder is Democrat.
