The only way to really know the age of a turtle is to see it be born.

One Box Turtle is known to be over 100 years old because some markings on it are identical to markings used by a researcher a hundred years ago. Human markings are rarely used as proof since they are usually either poorly documented or possible forgeries, but this turtle is probably authentic.

Some big snappers have supposedly been found with musket balls in the muscles from the Civil War or similar time period.

Turtles can be aged approximately by size if they aren't mature. Box turtles can be approx. aged if they are younger. As they age the shell smooths out so you can't count the rings in the scutes.

One source says aging can be done up to age 5 another says it can be done up to about 18-20 years.

Aging older adult turtles or tortoises is not accurately possible.

They go by how many birthdays the turtle has had.
