In the 1950's, Elvis Presley probably was the act of the decade. You can argue with me on this, but that's not the point. However, the Beatles were definitely the biggest musical act in the world in the 1960's. By the 70's, the Beatles went their separate ways, and I'm guessing either ABBA or Led Zeppelin took over. Michael Jackson ruled the 80's, especially with the release of Thriller. Michael Jackson may also be the biggest act of the 90's too, but Nirvana's Nevermind did sell a lot, not to mention after Cobain's death, Nirvana remained a constant presence in rock radio even until now. But with the decline of the music industry, it's hard to tell which act is the biggest. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold an impressive 16 million albums worldwide with their two albums from the current decade. The White Stripes had a show that sold out in twelve minutes. So which musical act is the biggest in the world starting from 2000?

*Note: This is not about the best act.

Maryn Bittner: It's not about how fast a concert sell outs. I don't know why I added the White Stripes bit, but anyway, "biggest" would mean size of fanbase, albums sales and single sales, and media coverage and popularity.

I would venture to guess that U2 is probably the most popular musical act in the world and have held the title since the release of :The Joshua Tree", "Achtung Baby", "All That You Can't Leave Behind", and "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb". This does not mean that they are the best but I believe that they could tour constantly the world over and sell out clubs, arenas, stadiums, and venues endlessly and easily. You can't really pigeon-hole them to a decade.... they are powerful and no one seems tired of them yet.

Easy question! Without a doubt, the answer is U2. They've been around since the late 70s, and still to this day, their albums sell 10s of millions of copies and their concerts sell out ALL OVER THE WORLD, not just in the States or Europe.

I still don't get how you're defining "biggest." Speed of sell-out at each venue? Number of sold-out concerts? Total ticket sales? Album/CD sales?

I suspect there's a different answer for every way the term "biggest" might be defined.

The Stones still sell out minutes after the tickets go on sale, but their CD sales are less than stellar.

It is amazing how no one has really dominated this decade. Just the lack of answers you've received in 10 minutes is proof of that. I've been thinking about this myself and really came up with no one.
The only pop icons that have risen have been from "American Idol" but none of them are all that popular or all that great.
The biggest bands I can name would be: Linkin Park, Nickelback and Coldplay. In any other decade, they wouldn't be named among the biggest.
