I want to take my drill sergeant husband to the beach for his birthday, but we are veyr short on time because he gets so very few days off. THANKS!!

If you only have a short time you might want to try a local lake. Savannah, GA is 250 miles from Columbus, GA. Then you will need to find a beach, say Hilton Head Island and that's another 40 miles. That's a long drive from Ft. Benning.
Your absolute closest ocean beach is going to be Panama City Beach, Florida at 180 miles. Your drive will be om US 431 to Dotha, Alabama where the road will change to US 231 all the way into Panama City. Your drive will take you 3 hours and 30 minutes.

From Columbus the closest beach would be the Emerald Coast of Florida,Panama City Beach.It is about 3 hours or so from there.

i just saw on mapquest and it look like you can go to savannah, GA beach or Jacksonville, Florida with both distnace it look like it will take about an hour or less. drive. good luck.
