I went back to 1922, but found nobody else who won by virtue of being the only one to secure nomination.

It appears John McDonnell was hardly taken seriously.

I have seen no mention of such a thing being unprecedented though. Seems it would bear widespread discussion were it the case.

I believe you are confused with the British parliamentary system. In this country we vote for the Political party in General elections, and the leader of political parties in britian are voted for by members of that party.

In america you vote for who you want to be president.
