Question 1 - Can segregation come back?

Answer 1 - It is making a comeback. Why? The minority groups are asking for it. In the Detroit area, where they have been trying to integrate the schools since the 1970's, they are trying to set up charter schools exclusively for the black children. Apparently segregated schools are bad if they are all white at behest of the whites, but okay if all black on behest of the blacks.

Question 2 - Can slavery come back?

Answer 2 - No. Slavery has been outlawed in the Constitution. 3/4 of the states would have to overturn that amendment. It won't happen. There are slaves in this country, but the people holding them are breaking the law. The slavers are using young immigrants chained to tables in mini-sweat shops, or girls are being held as prostitutes.

Question 3 - If Bush wanted to?

Answer 3 - No. Congress and the states would stop it. A military coup might make it happen, but coups are unlikely in America. We have various safeguards in place. Have you seen any action Bush has made where it looks like he wants to take over the country? All Presidents in this country have wanted the Presidency to be a little more powerful than it is, but Congress and the Supreme Court usually stop them. As does the will of the people.

Looking at history, anything is possible, however, if you are referring to the United States such a possibility is so low as to be nonexistent.

I suggest that you spend some time reading the Constitution of the United States and for greater understanding you might also add to that reading the applicable Supreme court cases.

In short, in terms of slavery, the president doesn’t have that type of power and neither does the congress. Neither does any special interest group.

I suggest that the issue of segregation is a very different issue. First is the fact that government sponsored segregation is not constitutional nor legal, and that won’t change. Many people confuse the acts within the private sector as the same as government initiated segregation, it isn’t. While there are some private acts of segregation that are illegal (such as public advertised rental, or house sales, or other forms of public interrelationships) truly private acts, such as who you invite to your house or who you choose to associate with, or who you marry don’t fall under such laws. There is nothing wrong with such personal decisions.

So too with what some have referred to as economic segregation because, in truth, there is no such thing. Certainly the differences in economic circumstances have people living in different neighborhoods. To move into any neighborhood requires the personal financial capability to maintain the structure you have purchased. That is, the price of the house (no matter how it is obtained) is only a small part of the cost of a house. Just because someone wants to live in a certain place doesn’t mean it will (or should) happen unless they can afford it. That isn’t segregation.

No, slavery is illegal and it is not possible for slavery to become legal again. There are too many people opposed to it for the law to be changed.
However, segregation still exists. Ironically, many churches are still racially segregated. Sad as it is, many people do not recognize people as people unless they look and sound just like themselves.

Bush is irrelevant. It doesn't matter what he wants, and he wouldn't want that anyway. The guy is not a good President, but he's not racist.

As far as segregation, the above poster got it right. It still exists, and always will, particularly here in the South, where most commonly the north side of big towns are exclusively black neighborhoods, and regardless of reason or racism, are the crime-ridden areas of town as well.

Segregation did not go away. It is not now based on law but by economics. Areas are off limits due to the cost of buying homes. Sadly not many minorities can move wherever the want because the incomes are too low.

Anything that's ever been can come back. Humans haven't changed.

You give Bush too much credit. He doesn't have that much power. Don't worry. Besides, his term is almost over.
