No, Gert, I don't. I think that it is a case by case phenomenon, based on the individual. Some people feel that they have no choice but to grow up in a hurry because their time of youth is not pleasant. Some people "never grow up". Time is wasted. We waste time on the simple and mundane things without thinking of the bigger picture, of how it can all end in the blink of an eye. Typically, it takes a rather prominent even for people to come to terms with themselves and what they have done in their lives, and they vow not to waste any more of their time wasting their time. Some succeed at it, some fail.

Youth is wasted on the young b/c the whole time they're young, all they worry about is growing up and becoming an adult - being independent and having freedom. Because they're in such a hurry to get to that next stage, they never acknowledge or enjoy the gems (sometimes hidden) of being a child.
Needless to say, it's a very real fact that some children have unhappy childhoods, or some don't get to have childhoods - are forced to grow up too quickly, which is why they don't get to enjoy it.
It's the adults who come upon childhood one day and see it as the lost golden age b/c it's something we no longer have or because we realize that we fast-forwarded through our childhood trying to be adults.
It's funny though, because we as adults we don't always see the paradox that is childhood - it's both very innocent AND cruel - not so much the divine golden age, or return to eden we yearn for. What we don't understand is the imminent danger of that lost golden age that is childhood, as well as it's goodness and purity. From that point of view, I can understand why children don't see it the way we do.

If a person is living without abuse, trouble with the law, or ,mental hang-ups i don't think youth can be wasted.

The young don't know enough about being young. They squander youth and don't know until later.
When the young grow old they know a lot about being young, and not much at all about being old.
