My wife's parents are calling it quits after 4 decades. My kids really love 'em. We haven't broken it to them yet. Just wondering if they'll "blow it off" or if it will affect them. Kids are 5,7, and 13.

My parents got a divorce after 25 years and my son was hurt but the worst part is that he did not understand what was happening and why everybody was crying and saying hurtful things about one another. He was seven when this happened. See grandpa found a new 25 year young grandma and mikey(my son) did not see that there was anything wrong with old grandma (my mom) so why get a new one. Kids see things so simply, so keep it simple for the younger ones, they don't need all of the details yet, they just need to know that grandpa and grandma will not be married anymore or live together. As for your oldest I would give her all of the details because she is able to understand what is happening and it will help her adjust to the situation if she knows what the situation is exactly.

You need to talk to the kids about how the grandparents will always love them. Kids do pick up on what is going on, slow it might be a go idea to have the grand parents talk to their grand kids about what has happened.

They will still love their grandparents. Each of the grandparents didn't die or anything. They just don't visit together (unless they still have a good relationship).

Kids are resillient. They don't care about the issues as much as they do about their relationship with each of the grandparents.

Why would you think they would "blow it off". When adults are selfish pigs kids always feel like their life is destroyed. The number one thing children what is security.

Don't give them that talk all about how their grandparents still love them, nothing will change. Things are going to change.
