In my hawkeye tank...i have 1 female betta(very small*but normal enough*)and i plan on getting 2 ghost shrimp as soon as i get the plants and they get established.....if you want a betta please get a female because in a 1 gallon tank the male cant really strech out his fins and that makes him lithargic...if you want to see a picture of her tank's old look go to paulsawesomeaquarium.blogspot.com @ the bottom of the page. hope this helps!!

I have been told many time, from a couple of pet stores (who would not sell me certain fish because my tank was not big enough) and my parents that the rule of thumb is: one inch of fish per one gallon of tank. I just recently had to get rid of two large fish because they actually outgrew the tank. It started to get too cramped with the two other smaller fish. So don't get something that is going to grow over an inch. But you know you could always get a little bigger tank. They aren't really that ecxpensive and save the smaller tank for babies or to grow small plants to transfer or to use as a spare when you need to clean the other tank. Hope I helped.

I agree with the idea of a female betta. I think males really need about 2 gallons. A couple little tetras would probably be okay too.
in my 2.5 gallon, I have my male betta, Monet, a few live plants (that is something you can add too instead of adding more fish), and a ghost shrimp. I think of the shrimp as Monet's pet or toy. He chases it when he is bored but doesnt really nip at it or anything. It just gives him something to do and keeps the gravel a little cleaner.

OMG! A fish store that knows what it's talking about. Yes, they are correct, you can only have one fish, and most specifically, your best and really only bet is one betta. You cannot put more than 1 fish in a 1 gallon tank unless you want them to die. Sorry.....

I am afraid that you are limited to a male Betta but you can have a Mystery Snail as a tank-mate for him. The snail will clean and eat the algae.
