Check out your Old Testament. I'm not sure if they were slaves in the way that the Deep South had individually owned slaves, but there were plenty of periods in which the descendents of Israel were the labor class, or second-class citizens, or even a subject people.

Read the book of Exodus, the second book of the old testament in the bible. Even if you're not christian, or religious. It's good historical reading. It tells the story of Moses, and how he led the jewish people out of enslavement in Egypt.

I think the story goes like they were used to build the pyramids or something, like in that movie. But they were definitely used as slaves in the camps.
