Has the emphasis on Hitler and the Nazis in school history lessons become counter productive? A question has been posted asking whether medical experiments should be carried out on criminals and paedophiles rather than animals. I just wonder how many people are impressed by Hitler and would follow his example in this country?

Jim g and wel Hung. I sympathise with a lot of what you say but I think your views are more likely to be a knee jerk reaction against a justice system that appears to be so pro criminals. It is so damned easy to think the way you do but it doesn't solve anything is decent people lower themselves to the level of the scum in our society. I am by no means a bleeding heart liberal but I just wish that the punishment should fit the crime. We wouldn't need ott views if this were to happen.

Vistazan, I agree with you completely.
There doesn't seem to be enough balance and so many young people don't seem to have heard of Churchill.

Are you kidding? The history being taught in school about WW2 now is leaning towards the notion that America was the bad guy of course. That we never should have dropped the bomb on Japan.
Not enough is being taught about WW2 and the evil we stopped. Im all for showing kids video of the concentration camps, and having survivors from the Holocaust, the Japanese torture camps and even the American camps where we locked away American/Japanese citizens during the war to speak at every school while they still are alive.
Its a very important part of history that must never be forgotten.

Hiya mate, how are you? I haven't been on in a while.

I answered that question, and I said even that was too good for the type of "people" he was talking about.
I'm not impressed by Hitler and his regime, it's scary to think what we could be living now if he'd won the war. Although we wouldn't know any different, so maybe we'd be as bad as him. All the history books would portray his victims (if that's the right word) as the perpatrators and the truth would be too well hidden for us to ever know it.
You're always going to get some minority who agree with his theories, unfortunately, racisim is still live and kicking even in this day and age, pathetic I know, but there it is. There are still those in every race, colour and creed that think they're better than everyone else, it's gone on since the dawn of time and still continues to day. We just have to defend our rights and stick to our prinicples and hope for the best.

When it comes to educationalists, I must confess to much cynicism. Many of them are 'left' of centre, so it doesn't surprise me that they would wish to attack anyone to the right of their political position by focusing on some of the nastier deeds carried out under Hitlers regime, and by cunningly trying to associate it in the minds of children as stemming only from 'right of centre' politics.

I personally don't think party politics has anything to do with it. Hitler merely provided an opportunity for sadists to do their worst. It could easily happen, however, under any totalitarian regime. Hitler came to power in a democratic Germany from within the German Socialist Party.

I am repulsed by the medical experiments carried out under Hitlers tyrannical regime, but, whoever suggested that we might do the same to criminals nowadays, reminds us that this evil didn't die with Hitler.

I don't think that this rather sick suggestion is a corollary to the teaching of Nazi history in schools. I do think, however, that it could be used as a mechanism for promoting 'left wing' politics, by suggesting that anyone who is patriotic is a little right of centre, and therefore, is more likely to approve of Hitler.

PS. Hitler had a no-smoking policy. So at least he shares that in common with our current administration, which is definitely not right of centre.

Rosie, I answered yes to that question not because I find Hitler and the Nazi's impressive, but because I find experiments of any kind, for whatever reason on innocent and harmless animals absolutely repulsive and criminal, I would feel the same if it were happening to any innocent and harmless human, however if we are to have live experiments to further medical research then i am all in favour of carrying these out on the barbaric, mindless scum who rape children and murder anybody for the fun of it, rather than some little animal whose everyday existence is a struggle for survival.

Churchill, Hitler, Stalin and Ghandi are being airbrushed out of history lessons in Britain. I'd like to know why. Good and bad, they were major influences in shaping the world we live in. How can we not teach about them?

Studying someone like Hitler does not mean wanting to follow his example. There are young people who apparently worship his memory, but most recognise him for the psychopath that he was.

No I don't think there can ever be enough taught about Hitler , Genocide and the Holocaust. They are prime examples of what happens when nationalism goes out of whack, when anti-semitism, anti-everything goes crazy. Kids need to learn more about facism, totalitarianism, communism, socialism, theisms so they can spot it when their governments start moving in that direction.

As for doing experiments on paedaphiles, sexual offenders, if they're convicted and are considered dangerous offenders who will NEVER get out of prison, I say let them do something positive for once in their lives and let doctors experiment on them, but only IF they give their permission.

Human trials have to happen eventually although I consider most paedaphiles and sexual offenders less than human, go ahead experiment on them, as long as they aren't coereced and give their permission through their lawyers.

I disagree entirely.

In the UK, some teachers are reporting that they will no longer agree to discuss certain events of WW2 - such as the Holocaust - because apparently the Muslim pupils get so angry since they deny it ever happened.

This is alarming and dangerous. Hitler, and all that occurred during the terrible, tragic years of WW2 is an integral part of British history and younger generations, of all religions, need to learn about it.

The British battled the Germans in the skies.

We must not ignore them in the classroom either.

I asked this question you mention, not because I am a fan of Hitler, or because I learnt too much about him at school, but because I think it's what the low life deserve, especially the paedophiles, OK maybe the murderers was a bit too harsh, but not the other sickos for whom there is no cure.
