Is anyone having a locust problem this year? There were like 50-100 on my big window last night of my home. They make this awful sound and are really big. Do they bite? I live in the southern U.S. and these things are freaking my out! I hear them in trees every summer and see the shells on trees, but never like this. Help.

There are different kinds of cicadas (people also call them locusts, although locusts are actually a type of grasshopper). Cicada 101:

There are different varieties of cicada. From June-September, male cicadas sit in trees and buzz, looking for a little romance. The females lay eggs (200-600 of them) into slits in tree branches. The eggs hatch and drop to the ground, burrowing as deep as 6 feet, and suck juice from tree roots. Depending on the species, they remain underground for 1 year or 17 years, then come aboveground, climb a tree, and the cycle starts over.

Annual cicadas show up every year.

Seventeen-year cicadas (periodical cicadas) had a big, big hatching in some parts of the US this year.

They don't bite. Yes, their buzzing is loud and annoying. Your area may be part of the Great Spring 2007 17-Year Cicada Hatch. Sorry about that!

Relax! I have never heard of them eating people.

I think they make an interesting "summer" sound, but I've never had more than a few in the trees here in Pennsylvania
so I guess a few hundred at a time would make quite a commotion.

Just chill out and keep calm; they won't live through the winter.
