People can be conservative on some individual issues and liberal on others. I'm a Democrat and would never think of having an abortion, but I don't think I have the right to make that decision for anyone else. But I have a son who is a Paralyzed Veteran and therefore I am for stem cell research and I believe if you had a child who was paralyzed you would change your mind on that issue. Think of the good that could be done. Don't you think it's kind of ironic that abortion is legal and stem cell research is not? It's almost like an oxymoron. If you are for gay marriage, as am I, then you better register Democrat. Republicans are totally against it.

You can be liberal on personal issues, supporting legal abortion, stem cell research and many other controversial issues and still be a republican.
The defining difference and far most important difference is the choice between socialism and capitalism.
If you think business and corporations are evil and must be controlled and punished by government, choose the democratic party. If you think that the purpose of government is to re-distribute wealth, the democrtatic party will welcome you with open arms.
If you think government should be reduced and government to back off from controlling our lives, choose the republican party.
One reason why it's difficult to undertand where these groups stand, we have a predominantly liberal media who distorts the facts, to favor the left; they'd have you believe anyone who goes to church is a book-burning fundamentalist; anyone who disagrees with a liberal is either a racist or fascist; the list goes on and on.
FYI
Many republicans would prefer to be libertarian and tell government to get out of our personal lives and also out of our business lives, BUT we stay in the republican party because the annoying parts about it (like fundamentalist religious wackos) are not near as dangerous and harmful as the democratic party.
You may not be totally aware that our country is in a struggle between capitalism and socialism because the media does not want the subject debated (why? because every country who has been seduced by the false promises of socialism has suffered for the bad choice).
The democratic party is full of people who are "single issue choosers- pro-gay, pro-abortion, pro-feminist, etc; they appeal to people emotionally not intellectually. That's why most people, when they are young and idealistic choose the democratic party; after living in the real world, they come around to opposing socialism; the ones that stay are either socialists or single issue lemmings.
Use your brain not your heart to make your choice!

Which ever party you join, or if you become an independent, it does not mean you have to vote along party lines.
I am a registered Republican, but I have voted for Democrats in many elections.
Do what you think is right for you and vote for the people that you feel are best for the job.

Why define yourself as either? Have the foresight, courage and determination to be an independent, removing yourself from meaningless 'labels'.
Nazis marched to a vicious tune all the way into their defeat in World War II.
Communist Russia led its people into a godless, crumbling, unproductive society because people followed like lemmings.
Think for yourself and relish in the freedom of choice, regardless of political affiliation. You would cringe if someone told you how to wear your hair - why be so indecisive when it comes to your vote? Vote for the person, not the party. Be proud and brave enough to vote for the person you believe is best suited for the job, not whether or not (s)he can be the winner.
Finally, understand that issues like abortion, gay marriage, flag burning and stem cell research aren't really even political issues. Those are moral issues that have no business being part of the political process. The monopolistic and corrupt two-party system includes those issues in their platforms because they know they will stir people's emotions. Politicians should be elected on their ability to manage the country's business and serve the people...not trying to legislate morality.
I encourage - implore! - young people to get involved in the independent political movement. Piss on the "Republicrats" - you have an opportunity to create a whole new nation based on elections that allow you to cast your ballot for whom you choose - not for some Republican or Democrat. Choosing between the 'lesser of two evils' isn't a choice at all. That's why so many people don't vote at all; they would rather NOT choose between he 'lesser of two evils'.
So, I advise you to vote for ANYONE BUT the 'lesser of two evils'. Find a political candidate that doesn't fit the mode, colors outside the lines, and thinks outside the box. THAT'S the kind of public servants we need! That's the kind of public servants you should be looking for with which to cast your vote! -RKO- 08/19/07

That would depend on which issue is more important to you (assuming you only care about these issues).
A few of the Republicans are for civil unions (somewhat), but none support gay marriage. The Democrats all support civil unions but only Kucinich, and Gravel actually say they support gay marriage.
All of the Democrats are pro-choice and pro-embryonic stem cell research.
All of the Republicans are pro-life (with the exception of Rudy) and most are opposed to embryonic stem cell research.

No matter your convictions, go where you are comfortable, and when you don't like what your party is doing, "Decline to State" in every primary election and choose the ballot you want to vote on at the polls on election day.
You are safe no matter which you choose. Just remember the other parties do not control our politics and most times your vote is wasted on any party outside the 2 Party System.

Perhaps you are neither. But how do you feel about the Iraq War? President Bush more generally? Do you have any strong opinions about the economy, welfare, or health care? These are all things you should take into consideration before deciding. Personally I am a conservative independent.

Register as an independent! I gave up on party politics a long time ago as I have my own mind and no need to belong to any "gang". Sounds like you're a pretty independent thinker, too.
