I have heard of adding a cable to support the sides, but will the tree grow back together?

You can't repair the crack.
The best you can do is support it so it doesn't get worse.

Severe remedial pruning. Complete amputation of one side or the other with the remaining half getting a good pruning or give both sides a severe pruning bordering on the criminal, the pom-pom pollarding look. And do not use any coatings on the cuts or the crack!! RScott

it wont grow back together... you could band the tree to help support it... also if you tar the crack to keep out water and ice which will aggravate it, that might help

You don't. You call an arborist who will tell you if it is even possible!
