Sure. Swimming anywhere can be a good workout. At the beach, you're swimming not just to move through the water but working against wave action, too, so that's very probably the source of your soreness.

I think the word "workout" implies that the swimming was done for other than a recreation activity and therefore it is supposed to make you sore and tired.

Salt water is supposed to be good for your muscles so I'd say yes. Besides, how can you feel bad after swimming at the beach? It's such a relaxing place you're bound to feel better.

swimming is supposedly a whole-body workout and in the ocean, well think of the resistance you're getting with the waves and stuff.
So yes, it gives you a great workout.

lets see. if i were u i would get a massager. i did a mile swim in the ocean and it just feels like swimming in a pool except easier. the waves might hurt ur mussles more.

Swimming is excelent excersize. The ocean is fine, but usually a large pool is easier and more conventional. Good luck.
