Still there arent a lot of choices for sub 500 laptops..and I dont reccomend one unless you are under a very tight buget. Average laptops today are usually in the 900-1300 range

an older high quality business laptop
if you are moving the laptop around ( not on a desk all the time) the cheap laptops are very fragile , not well built and poor economy.
If you have to have a laptop repaired - it is very expensive , intricate and you will throw the cheap laptop away.
The main thing to go on laptops is the battery. They last 200 charges ( one year for most). Cost of a new battery is approx $ 100.
If you need a battery most off lease computers ( dell is a good example) will come with a new battery
and a 90 day warranty
If the computer does not need to be portable and will be plugged in at a desk you can get a good deal on a used laptop without a good battery.
Refurb dells off lease are very good value
If you need wireless you can just install a pcmcia card network adapter

You cannot get a good laptop for under $500. You need to pay at least $1,000 for a good laptop. You can try looking on Tiger Direct for computers under $500. They won't be very good, but at least you'll get something.

I don't have an EXACT answer for you, but I HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest you look in your newspaper. Places like Best Buy or Circuit City have awesome deals that not a lot of people see. Also check your classifieds for a used one.

If you are getting a laptop to serve gaming purposes make sure the computer has at least 512 RAM.

Also, don't get a computer if it features a Celeron proccessor. THey suck.

Good luck ;)

I don't know if my labtop was under $500 dollars so I can't help you, but it's a good labtop all the same.

You can find one in that price range--just make sure it has 1GB of ram(1024).Instead of going by brand name(most have processors made by either Intel or AMD)look for the fastest and most ram you can get for the price. Go to Pricewatch.com for price comparisons (and TigerDirect.com), get an idea of price then buy it locally to save on shipping costs.
