There are so many low wage people with children that have default student loans, and the only way they can afford to pay them back is by having their EIC tax refunds garnished.

There's no way the government can collect on these default student loans if they do not garnish their income tax returns. People with children would be forced to work under the table in order for their familys to survive.

Why do so many of you assume that the poor dont work. I work 40 hrs a week making low wages just like millions of other people. After I pay my rent, daycare, food, telephone, gas, utilities, and other bills, there's NOTHING left.
I haven't even gone out to do anything fun since last October 2006, and even then, I only spent $50.
I relied on my IRS tax refund to pay for my student loan.

I know I'm not alone, and several other hard working familys are doing the same.

I happen to work for a large corporation that has outsourced its products and so that now we only do final assembly and shipping. The wages are incredibly low, and the company knows they can get away with it, because there is always someone willing to do the work for dirt cheap. If I dont do it, a Mexican will.

What many Americans don't realize is that, even if the IRS is eliminated, there will still be city, county, ans state taxes. Also there will still be social security and FICA coming out of their checks. The federal taxes and only a small portion of the taxes that come out of our checks. And all those people that really need their federal tax returns will be screwed. And it is not just the low income households that would be hurt if the IRS is eliminated

It's hard to tell if you're FOR or AGAINST firing the IRS. I think you're saying that defaulted student loans would never get paid unless the government garnished the defaulter's return checks every year. ..? If so, that's a sad way to look at things. I'm single and have NO student loan debt, yet I actually pay in almost 1200 a year in taxes! I manage to go to college AND pay for school. I would rather the government get screwed for once and have to cough up the money instead of me. When you take on a loan, it's just that...A LOAN.. just think of it this way..If the you borrowed money from a loan shark to pay for college, you'd make damn sure you could pay it back, because being tied to a cinder block and dropped off the back of a boat into the nearest body of water is a LOT worse than working a cash only job. It's funny what a person can accomplish when properly motivated.

Read the FairTax Book and you'll that by abolishing the IRS and taking on a sales tax with a prebate will make it so that poor families see an economic boost. That's what many of the Republicans are saying. Mike Gravel is one of the most liberal running for president and he wants to abolish the IRS and adopt the FairTax too. It just goes to show that it can't be like you describe. This is an unfortunate myth perpetuated by a range of political forces expecially lobbyists.

I agree with "THE WISE ONE" what does defaulting on student loans have to do with it. My return was taken for 5 years because I did not pay all they said I owed on income.I don't like the EIC returns. How many people actually spend the money on the children.NOT MANY. Now if the return came in the child's name like SSI does then the parent has to account for every cent. That way we know the money is spent on the child as it was meant to be..

What in the hell are you talking about?

If you have that many student loans then you should have a dregree in your hand and be employed, not considered a poor low wage family.

Here's an idea, if you can't take care of your children then quit having them.

People with kids get plenty of money back on their income tax, it's us married childless people who get penalized for behaving ourselves and not popping out babies !

We are the ones who are "devistated" come tax time! To see how much of our money is being kept and passed to the government to help pay for your sorry *** to breed more babies.

Quit your whining..........

You want them to keep the money for free??
How fair is that to the hundreds of thousands that struggle to repay the loans - many with families?
Did they have a plan on how to repay loans? They knew they were "loans" not gifts. There are no free educations except for scholarships.
Republican or Democrat - responsibility is needed. Work on ways to repay loan & stop expecting others to pay your way or shoulder your burdens. Church teaches shouldering others burdens by choice , not the IRS or stealing others money through higher taxes to pay your debts.

Even if the Republicans wanted to abolish the IRS (and they certainly haven't acted like they have in the past several years), they (we) have a war to pay for. If anything, they've made it so that the IRS will be around for a very, very long time.

Its not going to happen, nor is health care reform (neither in any significant way). These are promises they make to get their base behind them and appeal to the independents. When it comes down to the vote on each (Republicans on tax reform, and Democrats on health care reform....you will see both parties suddenly have a change of heart...as they always do).

Things 4 or 8 years from now will look pretty much the same, on both issues, as we have now....no matter who gets elected. (The President of the United States does not have the power to reform the tax code...nor reform health care....vote for your candidate on the promises they actually have power to implement...if you actually believe they will do so).

There they go again, trying to swat a fly w/a cannonball!I do think that the IRS could do w/a bit of re-tooling in regards to the invasive, often draconian measures that they take when dealing with law-abiding citizens, like forclosures&tax liens

If you default on a student loan, then in the eyes of any taxpaying American, you are a mooch.
What are you doing with a student loan and children? Sounds like lousy planning on someone's part.
