My dad just gave me his Gateway laptop because he just got a new Dell. The Gateway that I got is only about 3 years old. It's got Windows XP. It is one of there nicer laptops...he paid some big money for it. But for some reason it just runs so slow. The internet isn't bad b/c we have a good wireless in our house. But like when I start it up it takes forever. And I've been trying to do some Windows Updates and it starts checking for updates and then it comes up with an error message, like windows can't display the page. I also know that there is a lot of pictures and a lot of music on this laptop..could that be the reason for the slowness?

more than likeley he has a firewall blocking just about everything. Like high securfity. Need to go to the security part in the control panel and reduce the security to medium. You might have a antivirus program also that blocking sites and making it run slow. Say norton or mcafee or zonealarm. Stop the program from loading at startup and see if that makes it run faster. You can do this in the programs settings or go to run, tylpe msconfig, go to startup and uncheck the program. You ain;t gonna get a virus just by rebooting. Or just turn off the internet and reboot
