Yes. My little dog Fido was exactly like that. I never had to smack him for any naughty things he did...I would shake my finger at him and have a talk to him and he knew when I was disappointed...

He would try and suck up to me and I would tell him, no..mummy is not happy with you right now....so he would sit beside me and every now and then, I would catch him glancing at me.....we were such great mates.

I wound up moving to the States and my sister asked to take him and she promised he would be well taken care of. I found out, my beloved Fido wound up at the pound. I still break down and cry about this.

He was a Jack Russell mixed with some other Terrier breed.

Yes my dog has that sense, she is nearly eleven now.She knows when I'm tired or not feeling well.A couple of years ago she kept jumping on my knee(Yorkie) smelling and scratching my stomach and crying and I couldn't understand what was wrong until I collapsed in pain and had to have an emergency gall stone removal.
I only have to think about taking her for a walk and she jumps up and runs round in circles.
I can only type this now because my husband has taken her out!

My dog will whine when I cry, she'll get excited when I laugh, when I lay down like I feel sick she'll come up and lick me.

Spot is an English Pointer.
She's a great dog. I love her :)
