Not sure I understand the question but have you tried that foam insulation stuff? Great Stuff I think it*s called.
Fill the door with that and then put some kind of a vinyl tile or plastic square design over it. I had a hole where my doorknob fell off and pulled some of the wood with it.
I managed to find a design to put over the hole and paint it gold; Looks like it is part of the door.

I've done 100's of doors but I don't understand your question...more info and/or pictures would be helpful...is this a sliding door? Sounds like a new door is your next move, especially if this is a hollow-core door. If it's appropriate (just guessing here, but something that I've in particular situations), get some "Bond-O" at a home center or auto-parts store...follow the instructions and apply the Bond-O where you need it, keeping in mind that it stinks, that it dries REAL FAST in terms of a just a few minutes of workability, that you want to make it as smooth as possible while it's still pliable, that it can be sanded but it's a bit of a pain, and that once cured (24 hours) it can be drilled, screwed, painted, etc.

Sounds as if the area of the door that has deteriorated is by the lower pivot of a bifold door.
You have to remove the door.
If it is the area where the pivot (dowel) is located, the best way to repair it is to carefully remove about 4" X 4" of the core leaving the finished surface intact.
Cut a 4" X 4" block of wood the and plane it to the thickness of the core.
Fit it in and glue it with a good quality wood glue such as Elmers.
Clamp it for 24 to 48 hours.
Clean it up and re-drill the hole for the pivot.
Good Luck.

Take newspaper, wad it up and put into the hole for backing. Wal Mart has wood putty that you can fill the hole with. Use a lot. After it dries sand and stain.

use plastic wood you can get at the hardware store, just fill in the hole and then sand it smooth when it sets up, then you can drill a hole and replace as many screws as you need ! Good Luck!

Wood filler, it comes in different colours so you should be able to find one to match your door. Once it is dry just smooth it with some sand paper.

I know there's something called "wood putty" ...you'll have to find it at Home Depot and read the directions and see if it's what you need.
