The quickest way I've found to get video files onto a DVD to watch on either the PC or a domestic player is to use a program called DVD Santa (http://www.dvdsanta.com/ ). It's simplicity itself to use, and automatically handles the compression and transcoding necessary to prepare the files for writing to a DVD. You can either burn the DVD from within DVDSanta, or use Nero to write the VOB files to a disk. As for blank media, I use DataWrite DVD-R disks (these tending to be the most compatible with domestic players), but certain DVD writers have issues with certain blank media, so sometimes it's a case of trial and error until you find something that works for you.

In general DVD players only play DVD video, and computer video is generally AVI, NOT DVD Video. Thus, you need to convert AVI to DVD video format.

Fastest AND free is probably Divx2DVD, predecessor of VSO ConvertX2DVD. Though if you want GPL software you can use AVI2DVD.

Download DVDFlick, it's free and you can add any video files and it will convert them to DVD format so you can put them on a DVD disk.
