An Executive Order made by Abraham Lincoln which freed slaves in states which were not in the union as of January 1, 1863. Only slaves in Confederate states had freedom. Slavery was not abolished until the 13th Amendment was created.

In 1863, at the height of the War Between the States, the South was putting up a much better fight than expected by the North. It seemed that victory hung in the balance and the North feared that European powers would come in on the side of the South, not so much in fighting as in supplying arms and goods, etc. It was the lack of resources that ultimately defeated the South; that and all the immigrants that the North could pay to fight for them and replace lost native soldiers.

Most, if not all, European countries had passed laws against slavery and would not take a stand that would make it appear that they supported the system. For this reason Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves living in states in rebellion to the Union. You notice he did not free slaves living in states not in rebellion; that came later. This move effectively ended possible assistance from England and France, who had strong ties to the South and needs for their agricultural produce, especially cotton.

I think that Emancipation is celebrated on different days in the different Southern states, depending upon when the people heard about it. In my state the word did not arrive until June, 1865. I forget the exact date, but it was in the teens, I think June 19th; so the celebration here, which is a big one, is always called Juneteenth.

It served 2 purposes. 1 it freed the slaves. England was considering entering the war on behalf of the South. England could use the agricultural southern products. After the Emancipation Proclamation was signed the American Civil War became the War to end Slavery. A war to end slavery was a noble purpose the English people didn't want to interrupt.

Lodi gave a great discription. And is completely correct. But i love this question so much that ill restate it. Lincoln could have cared less about the slaves. The Republican party was against EXPANDING slavery into he west. Lincoln issued the EP to keep Britian and France from joining the war on the side of the confederates for they had abolished slavery. The EP only freed slaves in states that were in Rebellion in other words Kentucky could still have slaves. So the EP did basically nothing it was instead a means of keeping the Europeans out of the war.
