You're right. If you paid attention, you knew what was coming. It's pretty much the same way with all of Shymalan's movies. When Haley Joel Osment says "I see dead people" and he's seeing Bruce Willis' character when apparently no one else is, it's a no brainer. A lot of people thought his wife was just ignoring him over dinner. I thought "he's not actually 'there'."
The Village's ending was obvious right from the beginning.

I agree that for most who watched this movie--hindsight is better than foresight...
I didn't realize that the analyst was one of the dead from the very beginning, but I did figure it out somewhere in the middle of the film. The clues are straightforward, e.g. the only person who ever speaks to Bruce Willis is the boy, Willis never wears different clothes, & it's always cold when he's around.
It is an excellent example of directing and writing. Most viewers are engrossed with the fear that the boy experiences and overlook many of the clues.

I was pretty proud of myself that I figured it out about a half hour before the reveal. Of course I was watching it alone so all I could do was scream it out at my TV screen. When I re-watched it years later I saw all the subtle signs but they didn't make it obvious. You have to be paying attention to the current happenings and the background subtleties. I don't think it was obvious from the opening scene but I'll watch it tonight and let you know.

When I first watched this film, I wasn't paying to much attention to Bruce's character. I understood he got shot but I didn't really understand what was happening with his character. I was surprised when I did see the ending. Then again, I was a lot younger and probably more stupid. :)
Now, seeing it again, you can see it coming through the film. It is hard not to see the ending if you pay close attention to it. I also didn't know Toni Collette played his mom. I was surprised there too. :)

I guess the reason most people miss it is that you rarely get right into the movie from the get go. I mean people can re watch films a couple of times and then see things that they missed the first time round.

I found watching the film knowing what the surprise ending was makes the fim more interesting to watch. That way, you can try to spot the clues (there are many of them).

It wasn't a suprise for me but then again just before we put it on my aunty said "you know that bruce willis is really dead in it don't you" kind of spoilt it a bit! I am good at guessing the ends of films especially when family gives you a helping hand! Bless her!

Youre right, if you pay attention it's pretty clear. It took me a while. I finally figured it out when the wife was with the other guy in the antinque store and he slammed the door
