Sure. I assume you have a wireless router and both machines are already connecting to the Internet through the router and cable/dsl modem. One word of caution...if the laptop (or desktop) is connecting wirelessly, PLEASE TURN SECURITY ON. If it is not on, then you are just asking for it. OK lets start......Make sure the Administrator account or your aacount has a password on both machines. If it doesn't then RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) won't work. Make sure both machines are set to be remotely controlled by doing this: CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>REMOTE>Check the box the says Allow this computer to be controlled remotely.
Now we need the IP address of each machine. Go to START>RUN> Type cmd and hit ENTER. In the black box type ipconfig and write down the IP address. Now go to the other machine and go START>RUN> Type mstsc and it ENTER. When the box comes up put in the IP address of the other machine and it will bring up that machines login screen. Enjoy.

You need a switch. Grab a 5-port switch at Best buy, hook the Internet into port #1, and any other 4 computers into the other ports.

To communicate with other computers within your network, you'll have to be sure to change the NETWORK NAME on all your computers, IE MSHOME (is default).

easy
if you already have a router just buy a second patch lead and run the network setup wizard
if you use a usb modem, you can still connect them together by buying a crossed network cable -pins 1+3 and 2+6 are crossed then run the network setup wizard [you may need to manually set your internet connection to shared.

Activate File sharing feature on both and purchase a router so you can use both simultaniously.

Make sure you're both on the same network.
i.e. "Workgroups" by default in Windows.
