I'm sure you mean "accept" but anyhow, we are a compassionate country, and a generous country and we have social programs to benefit the young, old, disabled and needy, however, unlike a "Socialist Country", not everything is run by and for the benefit of the government. Pure socialism doesn't work, pure communism doesn't work and yes, pure democracy doesn't work. I believe our great nation has done a pretty good job of socializing services that are necessary and has still given the people the ability to achieve a better life through work and education. If it makes you feel better to call the USA a socialist country, then go with God, just don't be upset if a lot of us don't want to jump onto your bandwagon.

In a socialist country, you don't own your own property, although, I understand what you mean about the property tax. Pay it or lose your property. In socialism, the oil would be owned by the government. What is the alternative to public schools? Home school? We can still chose our own career path. Taxes generally go up and down with the administration in power.

I hate to think what this country would be like with no social programs especially in view of the fact that our job security is nonexistent except for professionals. People actually require some social programs to maintain society, civility, and stability.

This is a great example of how a word can carry negative connotations, while representing something benign.

Many people think of Socialism as the gateway to communism, and get communism confused with Stalinism. So things like Food Stamps, Medicaid, Public Schools and Public Education can be seen as a first step to losing our freedom of speech, to cast a vote, and worship.

In fact, however, almost all of the things you mentioned make our society work better. For instance, we can educate more students better by having public education, and we can fund it fairly painlessly by taxing property. Food Stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and Welfare can save us money by reducing crime (since there will be fewer desperate people who might have to commit crimes, or be susceptible to the criminal abuse of others.)

Aside from "High Taxes." which is a subjective issue, none of these things harm individuals when operated properly.

You can slash that freedom of speech thing from your list.
That has always been there as opposed to the rest of your list.

The reason we ARE NOT a socialist country is because all that you mentioned are not forced on us, aside from property taxes, high taxes and SSI. Of course those are more just democrat things, not socialist things. Give it time though, we're working on those to.

The rest are for our choice to use.

That is the difference. In socialist countries, regardless of your stature in society, you have no choice but to use those things.

Oh and by the way. It is "accept" not "except".

First let us start with a few corrections. Public schools are not necessarily socialist concepts. Federal control of them is. How do you equate Freedom of Speech with socialism? Freedom of Speech as a right is a totally American concept that preceded socialism by at least a hundred years.

I do agree the rest are socialist programs and they must be opposed as much a possible to repeal them or at least stop further socialist encroachment.

If Hitlery were to become President you would find out what real socialism is.( I believe that chance is as great as putting a camel through the eye of a needle) BTW this country is a capitalistic country. But conservatives believe in a hand up, not a hand out, unless it is for the elderly, children, the mentally disabled, etc. I also believe we should never have to see one of our veterans homeless. Of course you already know the facts, you are just stirring the pot!

It is capitalism that pays for all these socialist programs. Freedom of Speech, The Clinton's were the only ones that I knew of that went after print media that published stories unfavorable to them.

Just because we have aspects of socialism in our country doesn't mean we ARE a socialist country. We're a capitalistic country with aspects of socialism to it. And since several things you mentioned have been with us from the start (freedom of speech, public schools), that must be how our early leaders set the country up to be.

I don't think that we are a socialist country but a democracy that takes into account the things necessary to protect the less fortunate. We don't have high taxes especially compared to many of the socialist countries and many of the things that you mentioned aren't available in a socialist country.
