The only computer I own is the laptop. I will be using a Linksys router, if so.
The laptop itself came wireless ready.

Absolutely, you don't need a "main pc" -- what you DO need is a wireless router (replace the linksys non-wireless with a wireless one) OR you can get an Access Point (a more expensive solution).

When you hookup a router with wireless capability, you will have to wire your laptop to the router (with the provided cable) temporarily while you enable the wireless part, and select a WEP key (good idea for security). A good WEP key is to use a telephone number with area code. It turns out that the WEP key (not a WEP phrase, but a key entered directly) is 10 digits, and phone numbers are 10 digits (8185551212 for example).

Then give your wireless a name, like "private" (don't leave it as linksys, or whatever it defaults to). When you enable wireless, and reboot the router, you'll be able to disconnect the wired cable, then right click on My Network, select the wireless device, enable it (if not already enabled) and you will probably see your own wireless device. Connect to it, it will ask for a WEP key, type in the phone number you used to setup WEP and you'll be connected wirelessly.

it's easy.

note: to get to your network devices, use the RIGHT mouse button on My Network places, then choose Properties with the left mouse button. Then double click the wireless device, and check out the two tabbed pages. You'll find the place to view wireless networks, and be on your way.

You'll do this when you take the laptop to another location that might have wireless access, so learning how to do it at home will make it easier when you try accessing 802.11 at other places (WiFi)

Have fun

If the linksys router is a "wireless router" then it should work fine.. Just plug the wire from your modem to the router and it give a wireless signal.. Easy & simple so enjoy :)

Hope this helps & good luck,

Yes, You can use a RJ-45 cable straight from the broadband modem to the laptop or just have the carrier install a wireless router when the broadband is installed.

All you need to do is plug your network cable into the router and then your laptop will pick up the wireless signal.

You sure can. But remember if you have wireless in you home, so can everyone around you. Make sure your router is password protected. Most new linksys talk you threw this in their setup.

sure

you'll want to attach the laptop to the router via an Ethernet cable for ease of setting up the router controls, and if you're ok with the factory settings, it should work directly out of the box

internet connects to the modem (if your service needs one), modem to the router, and router (via Wi-Fi) to your laptop
