The five step concrete staircase in front of our house is falling apart. Someone suggested building over it with wood, using the concrete as a guide. Has anyone done this? How? We don't know what type of wood to buy or how to stain it for outdoors.... we are basically looking for step-by-step instructions! Thanks!

If you would care to send me some photos, and measurements, I would be happy to help you with step by step instructions, detailed to your situation.

In general:
Since you say your concrete is falling apart, you cannot build on it directly - there may be a need for a little demolition to make room for the wood staircase.
You need a ledger board - a 2x lumber that is attached to the house itself.
You may want to consider a small porch or deck to be added at this time too.
Finally stair stringers and treads need to be cut, and you may need to pour a little concrete to act as a foundation for the new steps.

Feel free to email me, I'd be happy to help.

I agree with the wrangler about step by step instructions. If you don't find his answers satisfactory e-mail me I can show you photos of mine as we did this for our back steps. You will want to use pressure treated lumber and preferably use screws to fasten. You will need to wait 2-3 weeks before painting or staining for the lumber to dry.
