Judging by the question, cichlids are not going to work out for you. They require a lot of experience, care and larger tanks than most are willing to buy.

That is far too broad of a question for anyone to reliably answer. Not just here, but even in a book. Many, many books have been dedicated to specific types of cichlids. The family of fish known as cichlids are found all over the world and range in size from about 1.5" to several feet long and their diets range from very small insects and worms to large fish and rodents. Probably the only thing that all cichlids share in common is that they are freshwater fish. I suggest you try a google or yahoo search and try to narrow the whole family down to a particular group you prefer, then to a small group within that group. From there you should be able to determine what is needed to set up a tank for them. If I can help further or guide you to helpful resources, please feel free to email me.

They are freshwater. I use to keep Cichlids. Mbuna from Lake Malawi. Colorful and very interesting fish. Go to www.cichlidforum.com
