The sky starts at the surface of the Earth and continues in all directions to infinity. Anywhere from standing on the ground on up is in the sky.

The sky is an optical illusion caused by the scattering of sunlight by dust particles and moisture droplets in the atmosphere. When sunlight is absent, the sky becomes transparent, and you can see out into space.

So you can be "in the sky" to anyone who is below you and has to look up to see you.

Maybe 300 feet above the ground. Or even lower. When the wind was in off the South China Sea, we used to have to approach the main runway at the old HongKong Airport by an approach path that literally took us between the tall buildings on the hillside above. People on top of these tall buildings were looking down on our Boeing 747, but to people in the streets below, we were 'way up in the sky.

So it's kind of subjective.
