Check out the ads on the side of the "science.com" website. These can, at least, give you some ideas of what kind of toys and activities are available. The "Learning Channel" and "Discovery Channel" web sites also have a large selection of science related toys, dvds, and other products.

Personally, I would recommend a gift that gets the boy outdoors to explore, such as a bug collecting kit, or a digital camera with a bird identification book. Even a telescope and some astronomy books would, conceivably be better than something that keep the child cooped up indoors.

Don't get me wrong. Construction kits can be educational and a lot of fun. I'm 57 years old and I still take out my K'nex set and play, once in a while. But a youngster needs to get out and explore.

there are many questions in a 8-10 years old child's brain, just encourage him to explore every answer by himself , providing the access to internet, and library. he will feel it is an interesting thing to find the answers to the questions by himself.
Any way you are a good father to have this idea.

Buy a box of crayons and each day pick one or two colors and while it is not to hot go outside with nature and let them find a color that matches the crayon. They will have a great time and you'll be surprised.
